Reading now for the third time. It was an unexpected joy. Both comforting and piquant. Nice narration.

When I’m in the mood for an angsty romance, I go to either Natasha Anders or Sherry Thomas—and Sherry Thomas is the more psychologically astute and stylistically ambitious author. I’d been putting off this read, just because I sensed it would demand a little more concentration than the average lighthearted romance. This is five stars on the merits of perfect prose, well-integrated plot and character development (with fascinating and vivid descriptions of travel through Colonial India and the Swat uprising) and a credible story of people figuring out how to love each other despite extreme environments, both internal and external. The hero is very easy to love. The heroine is guarded and prickly, and it’s mostly her emotional unavailability that gives this romance its tension. The happily-ever-after is utterly convincing and hard won.—Didn’t love the narrator, but try to look past that. ;)

Judith Ivory is probably my favorite author. She writes beautifully. Her adults behave like adults—with intelligence and a sense of responsibility. They also fall in love and have sex, which is just more adult behavior. The h in this one is not a virgin (and doesn’t apologize for it—fantastic), is feeling her age, enjoys remarkable sexual and political power and yet is also confronting the limits of her freedom in a society that doesn’t want to allow her “true love.” The H also has to make difficult choices between his love for the h, his desire for success and honor, and his love for the tribe that saved his life during the expedition that eventually made him rich. Ivory makes it so much fun to observe them make big decisions. You can think about courage, think about love, and get swept up in the lush, clever language and the charismatic characters. It’s a good one.
