Random inclusion of identity politics

Performances were decent, but the audio is somewhat chaotic. Given the nature of the action, this would work if the medium was visual, but in audio format, it loses something. I was a decent way through the story and was somewhat interested where it was going until the character started complaining about working for white straight men. it wouldn’t bother me if that’s what the story was about, but once again, it just seems shoehorned in.

Started well, then fizzled.

I’m not sure why it’s so hard to get top notch Audible Originals. They usually have stellar casts, and they start off well, but ultimately just don’t really go anywhere. It also feels like they try to shoehorn aspects that are not contributory to the story. if I didn’t occasionally get a really good one, I would just stop trying.

This was free, and it was worth the price I paid. Some of the stories were very good. Many felt unfinished, or at least unsatisfying. Maybe that was the intent. Some stories just felt too preachy to enjoy. I don’t know anything personally about the author, but my experience has been that I get that feeling typically with young authors, who haven’t learned that burying the story with your loses both. I won’t avoid this authors work in the future, but I won’t really look for it either.

Terrific book and great narration

I only heard of this book because of a recommendation in an interview with another favorite author of mine, Anthony Ryan. I’m so glad I picked it up. I particularly enjoyed the Audible version.

One of the best audible, originals I have heard

We need more of this. We need more Ed Harris and we need more from Don Winslow. This suffers none of the weakness of most audible originals. I have listened to, and I will start looking for other works by one or both of these people.

Not bad. It was worth listening to, but I doubt I will go further.

This was a nice way to revisit detective novels of old. The narrator did a good job. I was someone irritated by a few character, inconsistencies and behaviors. The MC expressed annoyance at detective novels or revealing previously unknown clues, but then just the same. For the amount of set up, the resolution came about too quickly. in an attempt to contradict some stereotypes, others were reinforced. This makes it sound worse than it was, and I did enjoy the listen.
