Historia
On the morning of December 26, 2004, on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, Sonali Deraniyagala lost her parents, her husband, and her two young sons in the tsunami she miraculously survived. In this brave and searingly frank memoir, she describes those first horrifying moments and her long journey since. She has written an engrossing, unsentimental, beautifully poised account: as she struggles through the first months following the tragedy, furiously clenched against a reality that she cannot face and cannot deny....

Heart wrenching yet so authentic
Revisado: 12-06-22
I listened to this book with apprehension as a mother, wife and human being. This is a beautifully written portrayal of family and grief . I will never forget the gift of this book.

Thought provoking and beautiful blend of nature and human development
Revisado: 08-08-22
This novel surprised and engaged me throughout. The characters, dialogue and experiences were truly authentic. Glad I read it now as we emerge from the worst of the past democracy yet uncertain days ahead .

Historia
They were three Black girls. Dawn, tall and studious; her sister, Kim, younger by three years and headstrong as they come; and her best friend, Debra, already prom-queen pretty by third grade. They bonded—fervently and intensely in that unique way of little girls—as they roamed the concrete landscape of Bronzeville, a historic neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, the destination of hundreds of thousands of Black folks who fled the ravages of the Jim Crow South.

Enlightening and well-told personal narrative
Revisado: 10-27-21
This book brought so many images to mind of people, families, neighborhoods and the social structures that shape journeys . The author is so open in presenting the “characters “ of all generations including herself, sister and friend. I appreciated her candor and open-hearted emotional and when needed objective storytelling.
