Audiobook review
Revisado: 01-16-20
This was a fun and funny listen. The hubs and I always have a jigsaw puzzle going and the other day while were were puzzling we turned this on and I think he enjoyed it just as much as I did.
The story is told from the point of view of the last unicorn who has a love for music, but he would love to form a band, so that is what he does. There are readers for all the different characters and the full cast makes this book even more entertaining. It was a very fun story that had enough mystery to keep us listening and wanting to learn more about what was going on. There is music throughout as well and it made for a great listen.
This book is intended for a middle grade audience but we enjoyed it as well. Would be especially great for a car ride!

Rivals Review
Revisado: 12-12-19
This audiobook is for anyone interested in learning really weird and fun facts about rivalries. This edition talked about queens and shoe companies. It was so interesting. I had no idea that Puma and Adidas were to fraught with rivalry, and who knew so much about the chaos that came from finding dinosaur bones.
This was a book about nonfiction topics that had silly voices and told the tales of rivalry like it was a story, it was wonderful to listen to and I am so happy to have grabbed it.

The Spies that Bind Review
Revisado: 07-15-19
I have not read the Gallagher Girl books so I picked this one out of the Audible freebies to see how I would like it. I think it is great when series come out with novella prequels, they are like dipping your toes in water to see if it is cold. If it works out you have a whole new series to jump into, and if it doesn't you can move on without getting too invested, and I really appreciate that.
The Spies that Bind is a novella following Cammie Morgan and her first days at Gallagher Academy. She isn't sure about all the spy training and even more than that she is not sure if she will ever fit in.
I thought that she was a fun point of view to listen to and the chapters included random lists that she made about her time adapting to her new life. She is nervous but seems to know herself but is becoming stronger every day she is there.
The story is entertaining but very quick and it got to the climax point and them pretty much just ends, but it was a good ending and I think that this series would be a good one to get into (if/when I ever have the time).
This book is only available as an Audible Original at the moment, I think I read somewhere that after a year (maybe) there would be a print option. So that suck for people that like print editions of series, but it was a fun listen and a good break from my review books.

You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) review
Revisado: 07-15-19
I really love Felicia Day. I have watched and loved The Guild, I follow her on all the social medias, and I really enjoyed Geek and Sundry when she first started it along with her show The Flog. I find her nerdy anxiety refreshing and relatable. She is one of my heroes - she is a hard worker, likes what she likes without embarrassment and adorable while doing it all. (I sound like a stalker - I am not, I promise). I just really love people that can be themselves and appreciate the nerdy things that they enjoy. I love to read (I think my readers know this by now) and I used to hide my reader-nerdiness, once I fully embraced it I really was able to be myself.
Anywho! The Audiobook was wonderful. Felicia Day herself reads it to you and interjects with times to stop and look at the PDF that as also included to look at pictures of her craziness. She talks fast and tells her story with so much enthusiasm and it feels right to listen to her telling it.
She goes through various parts of her life step by step, from her wacky family and homeschooling, to wanting to act and getting herself through those phases. She is honest and not every step was wonderful for her so it is down to earth.
(Random note: a few times she comments on her future children, and I love that because she is a mom now and I am wondering is she looks back on this book and takes note of the things she said).
If you are nerdy, more specifically internet and World of Warcraft nerdy, this will strike a cord with you. If you are female, I think even more so, but I am not saying that men won't enjoy it as well - being inside the female brain is a scary and fun place.
It took me a long time to pick this one up and finally take the time to read/listen to it, but I am SO glad that I did.

Everyone that is, except for Zero, whose pod has malfunctioned, waking him up a hundred years early. His initial excitement in roaming the ship alone quickly turns to a heart-stopping interstellar adventure when a family of space pirates show up, trying to hijack the ship and take the colonizers hostage.

Zero G review
Revisado: 07-15-19
Zero G was a short listen read by a full cast. It is around Chapter 6, and about 40 minutes in that Zero's pod malfunctions and the fun begins. Zero realizes that he is all alone awake on the ship and for a little while he has fun eating a bunch of foods, and painting etc. The things get real when space pirates try to take over the ship.
The was a great story and the full cast in this one did a great job, I think I liked this one better than some of the others because there was still a narrator as well as the cast. It took about half of the book to get to the drama of the pirates but since the book is only a few hours long it felt balanced. The book is a great middle grade science fiction, it was well paced and there was enough excitement to keep me listening. I think this is a fun one and would recommend it to those that enjoy middle grade reads, science fiction, or those just looking for something short to listen to.

Does nature really make us feel better? The 3-Day Effect takes a look at the science behind why being in the wild can make us happier, healthier, and more creative. Whether it’s rafting down Utah’s Green River, hiking in Utah’s wilderness, or walking through Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC, scientists are finding that the more exposure humans have to nature, the more we can benefit from reduced anxiety, enhanced creativity, and overall well-being.

3-Day Effect Review
Revisado: 07-15-19
Getting the ability to download these freebies from audible every month has really enabled me to listen to things that I wouldn't normally pick up. Some are hits and some are misses and that is fine. Since I am back in school for psychology again, I was drawn to this one in the month of May.
the 3-Day Effect is about how spending three days in nature can help rest your brain. It causes you to be more in tune with yourself and more appreciative and is shown to decrease stress. This particular book follows Florence Williams as she participates in studies with other groups to see what the studies are looking for and if it can work for her through a rough time in her life.
My likes for this one were regarding the overall content - I liked learning about the studies that researchers are doing to try to prove that this is a valid therapy and can really help people. I like learning about the science behind it.
However, there were some dislikes, mainly with how it was presented. I liked learning about the different types of trips that are done to help, but I was not really investing in Florence's story and I understand that divorce is hard (I have not been through it so the full context might be lacking for me) but I also feel like comparing it to PTSD from war and being a sex-trafficking victim might be a bit off the mark. I am not saying there is no pain there but the book made it out to be more about her than the science.
It is an interesting concept and I will definitely be looking more into the science behind it to see what information and hard data has been gathered.

The Beast's Heart Review
Revisado: 07-15-19
Jim Dale reads the audiobook and does an amazing job. I love when he narrates them.
This retelling is told from the point of view of the Beast as he comes to realize his fate and tries to adapt, learn about himself though this new lens life has handed him. It is a similar story to many Beauty and the Beast retellings however as it is told from his perspective there is the addition of essentially a new story - you get to learn how he feels about everything that is happening.
Beast's tale is one of depression and confusion and he is just trying to figure out what happened and if it can be alleviated. He is impulsive but kind and in this book seems very sensitive and overly aware of his beastly form. He is a wonderful main character and it is almost sad to hear his feelings and thoughts as the tale progresses, you just want the best for him. What makes this possible though, is that the curse is told a little differently - the best has not necessarily done anything wrong yet, but the fairy sees evil in his heart and is trying to circumvent it.
Isabeau, is a captive as she was previously, but she does choose to be imprisoned and her story involves two other sisters, which is a slight break from the Disney version. She was a bit somber at first but really turns it around and wants to genuinely befriend Beast and help him through his struggles.
Overall, this was a great retelling and I really enjoyed that it was told from the Beast's side. I liked the changes that were implemented to make it more modern and believable. So why not 5 stars? When you pick up this book, you have to understand that there is not really a full on climax to the story. There is no grand battle, all of it is emotional battles being fought by both Beast and Isabeau, so it takes a bit longer to get through than your typical fantasy novel. Otherwise, it was a wonderful listen.

Even Tree Nymphs Get The Blues Review
Revisado: 07-15-19
This short novella is part of a bigger series that I have not read, but I thought the novella sounded interesting and it was. The story is about a tree nymph making her home in Mystic Bayou and starting an ice cream parlor. She meets a nice man and they hit is off, until something happens.
The chapters alternates between the point of view of Ingrid, the tree nymph, and Rob the man she hits it off with. It was a fun listen and I found the characters enjoyable and the story funny. But due to its length I was not so invested in the characters that I really loved them.
That being said it did make me interested in finding out more about the series though. So if you are looking for something new and on the short side, an a paranormal romance... this would a great listen.

Killer By Nature Review
Revisado: 05-20-19
I was able to get this Audible Original from Audible with my subscription as a freebie in February and they only offer 6 every month so I choose this one along with a young adult read - free books yay! The synopsis sounded interesting and I like books about psychology related things, but it fell short and I was not a fan.
The audiobook is broken up into episodes and there is a full cast of readers, which is kind of fun. Each character is a different voice to listen to. The book is about a serial killer and a forensic psychologist and a copy-cat killer, so it is a murder-mystery coupled with a drama.
While the main story was interesting and I liked the murder-mystery pieces, because of the sub-plots I found it hard to get into. The pacing was a bit weird and that might have been because there were so many characters to keep track of and with all the voices it was an added layer of difficulty. The sub-plots about Buckley and her family were weird additions and I found her to be a horrible mother - so it was not surprising that she is having issues with her teen daughter. The there is the inspector who I think had a thing with Buckley at one time but I can't be sure because all the voices sounded the same as I got more into it.. and I felt like they should have started to distinguish themselves.
Part from the sub-plot issues, I had a few other dislikes with this one: First, the story is broken up into episodes, which is fine, but when it breaks before each one there is louder music and the title again - every time I felt like the book was coming to a close rather than diving in deeper. Secondly, all the sound effects; on top of a cast of readers there were sound effects - some made sense (doors closing) and some were just background noise and obnoxious. I think that this made it feel too real and with a book I want to zone out and into the story and because I was checking my surroundings when these sounds happened I couldn't focus.
So, this was not for me, but it was free so I gave it a chance and now I know.

Riley Mack Review
Revisado: 05-20-19
Riley Mack is the first book by Chris Grabenstein that I have pick up outside of the Mr. Lemoncello's Library Series. This audible original is read by a full cast and has background noise as well. Each character is read by a different voice actor/ess.
The book is the first in a series, and it follows a boy named Riley Mack. He and his gang of friends help their friends and family solve mysteries and crimes in their small town. The story was fun and all of the different plot elements kept me guessing. There are a bunch of smaller side stories that all come together in the end and it added a lot of depth to the story.
Riley, the main character, just wants to do good, but the town cop has it out for him, much like the cop's son has it out for all the 6th graders. Riley tends to get wrapped up in trouble as he tries to help the people around it am it lends to some hilarious mishaps and trouble for him and his friends.
An aspect that I really liked about the story was that one of the kids always uses great vocabulary words and then defines them for the reader, and he does it quickly and it is part of his quirky personality so it fits really well into the story - so well in fact I didn't even realize I was learning definitions until I had to stop and really think about it. A great learning tool that is obvious but not so.
I enjoyed this book, but the full cast thing kind of threw me off again. I listened to an adult book that I gave up on that was similarly done. I think it is a fun way to voice all the characters but I feel like presenting it this way also takes a bit away from the character development that I like in most books.
This book was fun and very short, so I think reluctant readers will like it, however since I really love the Mr. Lemoncello's Library series, this one fell a bit short for me in comparison.
