Historia
Growing up on a farm in Ohio, George always preferred being outdoors and exploring. This made school a challenge, but his hunting, fishing, and trapping skills helped put food on his family's table. As a poor teenager living in a rough area, he got into regular brawls, and he found holding down a job hard because of his wanderlust. After working out West with the CCC, he decided that joining the Marines offered him the opportunity for adventure plus three square meals a day; so he and his brother joined the Corps in 1941.

Magnificent memoir
Revisado: 10-25-19
Sgt Peto has a great memory of details. He asks how he got through 4 campaigns without a scratch, but in the end his purpose in life was to recount his stories. He was very honest about his choices, good and bad. This book is well written and narrated.

Historia
Narrated by Emmy Award–winning actor Martin Sheen, The Home Front: Life in America During World War II takes listeners into the lives of Americans at home—part of the Greatest Generation—who supported the war effort and sustained the country during wartime. The war brought immediate, life-changing shifts: the rationing of meat, dairy products, and sugar; an explosion of war-related jobs; and, despite mixed signals, a greater role for women working outside the home.

Really well done BUT!
Revisado: 10-08-19
I loved how this series was done, especially the audio recordings of people who lived in those times. However, there seems to be a political undertone, explaining history from today’s political lenses. Martin Sheen is the most obvious indication. He too often represents ultra-liberal causes that makes him too biased to believe anything he does is objective. I would love to hear more details about the topics in the series.

Historia
For the Allied armies fighting their way up the Italian boot in early 1944, Rome was the prize that could only be won through a massive offensive. Military historian Mark Zuehlke returns to the Mediterranean theater of World War II with this gripping tribute to the Canadians who opened the way for the Allies to take Rome. The book is a fitting testament to the bravery of soldiers like the badly wounded Captain Pierre Potvin, who survived more than 30 hours alone on the battlefield.

Great content - fast speaker
Revisado: 01-19-18
The narration overall, more the tempo, was too fast to grasp each battle scenario. If it was read a bit slower, the story would have been easier to follow.

Evans interweaves a broad narrative of the war’s progress with viscerally affecting personal testimony from a wide range of people - from generals to front-line soldiers, from Hitler Youth activists to middle-class housewives. The Third Reich at War lays bare the dynamics of a nation more deeply immersed in war than any society before or since. Fresh insights into the conflict’s great events are here, from the invasion of Poland to the Battle of Stalingrad to Hitler’s suicide in the bunker.

All three volumns were very informative. The narrators voice and cadence was spot on for listening to history subject matter. I wish it was longer because I enjoyed it so much.

Historia
As early as 1941, Allied victory in World War II seemed all but assured. How and why, then, did the Germans prolong the barbaric conflict for three and a half more years? In The German War, acclaimed historian Nicholas Stargardt draws on an extraordinary range of primary source materials - personal diaries, court records, and military correspondence - to answer this question. He offers an unprecedented portrait of wartime Germany, bringing the hopes and expectations of the German people to vivid life.

Historia
No conflict better encapsulates all that went wrong on the Western Front than the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The tragic loss of life and stoic endurance by troops who walked towards their death is an iconic image which will be hard to ignore during the centennial year. Despite this, this book shows the extent to which the Allied armies were in fact able repeatedly to break through the German front lines.

You'll listen to it twice!!
Revisado: 07-07-17
Would you listen to Somme again? Why?
I would because if you listen to it normally, you'll miss details. I want to listen to it slower with maps in front of me.
What did you like best about this story?
The reading of letters from participants and the narration in between that puts it into modern day perspectives.
Which character – as performed by Roy McMillan – was your favorite?
Roy did an amazing job, I don't know if he performed all the different accents, but if he was, he was spot on doing English, Australian, German, Scottish, Irish, New Zealand and Canadian accents.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
If I could I would, except its rather long for that. I'd rather listen to it in chunks and replay parts.
Any additional comments?
This audiobook was like watching a documentary on tv. However, it was better because more details are brough forward and paints a more livid picture than what's edited out of television versions.

Historia
From July 10, 1943, the date of the Allied landing in Sicily, to May 8, 1945, when victory in Europe was declared - the entire time it took to liberate Europe - no regiment saw more action, and no single platoon, company, or battalion endured worse, than the ones commanded by Felix Sparks, who had entered the war as a greenhorn second lieutenant of the 157th "Eager for Duty" Infantry Regiment of the 45th "Thunderbird" Division. Sparks and his fellow Thunderbirds fought longest and hardest to defeat Hitler.

Average quality book chained to bad reader
Revisado: 09-17-16
I loved how Game of Thrones was acted out by the reader. He changed his voice for females, and added some different dialects. The Name of Wind reader, read too fast and in the same tone. The book writing could have been less detailed in description and still get the story across. My mind kept wandering as the books plot didn't catch my attention.

Historia
This highly regarded war memoir was a best seller in both Japan and the United States during the 1960s and has long been treasured by historians for its insights into the Japanese side of the surface war in the Pacific. The author was a survivor of more than one hundred sorties against the Allies and was known throughout Japan as the Unsinkable Captain.

Very Insightful
Revisado: 08-09-16
If you could sum up Japanese Destroyer Captain in three words, what would they be?
Insightful, detailed and fair
What was one of the most memorable moments of Japanese Destroyer Captain?
The most memorable is how Haro changed his tactic of not swerving to avoid air attacks.
Which character – as performed by Brian Nishii – was your favorite?
The main character is Haro, who I liked alot because he's honest and didn't buy into the propaganda that sold kamikaze.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yes, when Haro lost 43 crew members and the ship was disabled.
Any additional comments?
Their are many details in this book that every World War 2 history buff should read. The Japanese perspective isn't as well known because they would kill themselves rather than face defeat. This Japanese navy captain saw alot of action and was different than his compatriots in how he viewed tactics and strategy. He's critical of his own nations strategies and also corrects many American accounts of battles.
