Historia
In 1992, the deadliest year in Chicago’s history, seven-year-old Dantrell Davis was shot and killed in front of his elementary school inside the public housing complex Cabrini-Green. What happened to Dantrell led to a truce among Chicago’s gangs, but it also ignited a national panic about poverty and violence in America’s cities. Dantrell’s name would soon be used to demolish all of Chicago’s high-rise public housing, displacing tens of thousands of low-income families.

Lose the dramatizations
Revisado: 01-17-25
The story in characters are interesting and the writer does a good job delving into various factors in society that led to the downfall of Cabrini-Green. The dramatization’s interspersed throughout the reading are distracting and redundant.

Fascinating
Revisado: 01-17-25
The story kept my attention with endless twists and turns. Richard Flaherty is an amazing tragic character. You can feel the writers, compassion and respect for him. Overall, it is a very good read.

Disturbing inside view of Hollywood and Addiction
Revisado: 10-24-24
This book is an honest inside look at just how awful addiction is and how depraved a person can be when substances rule their life. The man had everything but repeatedly chose to give it all up, and put himself and the people around him through hell. I wish others in his situation find peace and avoid the tragedy that his life ended up being.

Historia
After years of hiding her addiction from everyone—stockpiling pills in her Louboutins and elaborately scheduling her withdrawals between PTA meetings, baby showers, and tennis matches—Laura Cathcart Robbins is running out of places to hide. She has learned the hard way that even her high-profile marriage and Hollywood lifestyle can’t protect her from the pain she’s keeping bottled up inside. Facing divorce, the possibility of a custody battle, and the insistent voice of internalized racism that nags at her as a Black woman in a white world, Laura wonders just how much more she can take.

It was OK
Revisado: 01-06-24
It is a decent cautionary tale and account of detoxing but somewhat shallow. The narrator was good which helped keep me listening through to the end.

Historia
Pretty, smart, and pampered, Audrey Marie Hilley grew up in a small Alabama town believing she was entitled to the best of everything. But marriage to her high school sweetheart, a cushy secretarial job, and motherhood were not enough to satisfy Marie, and she soon began to act out in troubling ways. Only when her husband, Frank, became sick with a mysterious illness, did it seem that she was ready to put someone else's needs ahead of her own. The truth was far more disturbing.

The narrator sounds a bit like the guy from the dry eyes commercial but the story makes up for it. There are some crazy twists and turns that kept me fascinated until the end. Very unique story and worth the listen.

Written before the guy was caught
Revisado: 07-22-20
I was waiting for the story of how he was caught but it never happened. This book was written prior to the capture of Gary Ridgeway. The performance was very dry as well.

Historia
After more than a decade, when sisters Nikki, Sami, and Tori Knotek hear the word mom, it claws like an eagle’s talons, triggering memories that have been their secret since childhood. Until now. For years, behind the closed doors of their farmhouse in Raymond, Washington, their sadistic mother, Shelly, subjected her girls to unimaginable abuse, degradation, torture, and psychic terrors. Through it all, Nikki, Sami, and Tori developed a defiant bond that made them far less vulnerable than Shelly imagined.

I kept waiting for the story to develop in to more than a list of misdeeds but after several hours in, I gave up. I feel for anybody who has experienced abuse but I didn’t listen long enough to find out if the mother got her comeuppance.

Historia
On July 27, 1996, a hapless former cop turned hypervigilant security guard named Richard Jewell spotted a suspicious bag in Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park, the town square of the 1996 Summer Games. Inside was a bomb, the largest of its kind in FBI and ATF history. Minutes later, the bomb remotely detonated by the attacker amid a crowd of 50,000 people. But thanks to Jewell, it only killed two and wounded 111, not the hundreds who authorities estimated could have otherwise died. With the eyes of the world on Atlanta, the games continued.

Starts off a bit slow, but gets better
Revisado: 07-22-20
The background information in the beginning was a bit dry but I enjoyed the book overall. The writer did a good job of showing all sides of Richard Jewell. He was a unique character who was unfortunately misunderstood by many. There is a good moral to the story, judge not lest ye be judged.

Historia
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

Historia
On a summer night in 2009, three lives intersected in one American neighborhood. Two people newly in love - Teresa Butz and Jennifer Hopper, who spent many years trying to find themselves and who eventually found each other - and a young man on a dangerous psychological descent: Isaiah Kalebu, age 23, the son of a distant, authoritarian father and a mother with a family history of mental illness. All three paths forever altered by a violent crime, all three stories a wake-up call to the system that failed to see the signs.

Too many boring detais
Revisado: 11-01-16
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. It was 3 hours of material stretched over 9 hours. I didn't need to know the life story f every minor character in the book. Very redundant as well. Had to skip ahead a lot.
Would you ever listen to anything by Eli Sanders again?
Maybe. He is a skilled writer but this was just too much.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The narrator die a good job.
Could you see While the City Slept being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Movie maybe.
