Phenomenal- a book inspiring me to put down the audiobook from time to time
Revisado: 08-31-24
I was motivated to pick this up, having met one of the authors recently. I was impressed by him then and doubly so after listening to this collection of short book reviews. Not only is this a ready-made book list for all avid readers, it’s also a pity collection of lessonsfor leaders of all ages and stages from some of the best leaders working today.

Indie-rock icon Aimee Mann is well acquainted with trauma and the transformative act of using it as a basis for artistic expression, but that doesn’t mean that she knows how or why it works. Mann goes on a journey of discovery to better understand the link between damage and why what we do with it matters.

Love Aimee but…
Revisado: 03-26-23
I got very little of value out of this collection. While her songs are deeply personal, they nevertheless translate to a broader experience. One that I can understand and appreciate. This collection of interviews, however, was deeply personal in a way that did not translate. I guess I’ll just stick to the music.

Historia
The lifeblood of any free society is persuasion: changing other people’s minds in order to change things. But America is suffering a crisis of faith in persuasion that is putting its democracy and the planet itself at risk. Anand Giridharadas takes us inside these movements and battles, seeking out the dissenters who continue to champion persuasion in an age of polarization. As the book’s subjects grapple with how to call out injustices while calling in those who don’t agree with them but just might one day, they point a way to healing, and changing, a fracturing country.

While some of the examples here are, in fact, of persuaders, most are highly partisan biographies of individuals uninterested in engaging in any sort of broad discourse. Just because someone is able to “energize their bases” hardly makes them a persuader in my book. I wouldn’t consider Hannity or MTG persuaders either, and yet they fit the bill just as well as several of the examples given here.
Recommendation: listen to the podcast interviews with the author and pass on the book. I left unpersuaded.

Meandering and harder to follow than the first few
Revisado: 10-04-21
While I enjoyed this latest addition to the Stormlight Saga, I found myself more lost than found during vast stretches of this meandering world-builder. Not so much because the world was getting too big, but rather because the details and histories were getting too dense. The book was like a mashup of university-level theology and chemistry classes surrounded, at times, by character development and plot progression. I hope Brandon simplifies things a bit for the next one. I already have a degree… I don’t need another one.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

Ok as an audio documentary
Revisado: 01-07-20
I never really bought into the plot or story arch, such as it is, of this book but it is an interesting peek into the current life of Native Alaska. You won’t learn much about the old traditions or cultures which I think is the point. The performances are effective and at times the characters very engaging. But at the end of the day it’s more documentary than story.

Thank you Audible
Revisado: 06-26-19
Audible should be commended for their continuing service to the public availability of reports such as this one. Although clearly very quickly put together and released, narration is very good and the content are very helpful to put news reports in a much broader and larger context.

Historia
From Brexit in the UK, to Donald Trump in the US, to extremist parties in Europe and the developing world, populism has dominated recent headlines. What explains this rise of leaders who stoke nationalist anger in their countries, from Le Pen to Erdogan? How long will the populist wave last? Who will be the winners and losers in this climate, and how can we defend the values of democracy, free trade, and international cooperation? No one is better suited to explore these questions than Ian Bremmer, who has built his career on assessing global risk for his clients.

Can’t quibble with the diagnosis but wish there were some treatment options
Revisado: 08-14-18
The book reads like a fair assessment of what is going on around the world with rising populism, a rejection of globalization and turning back on multi national organizations and cooperation. But that’s where it feels like this book stops while it should continue. It does a fair job of diagnosing current problems, and predicting the difficulties that are likely to come as these trends continue. But by not prescribing ways that humanity can avoid the that future state, the book becomes a pessimistic treatise on today’s issues that left me depressed about the next 10-20 years.

The epic and highly anticipated conclusion to the listener-favorite series that had countless Audible listeners (and employees) hooked from the very first Bob - featuring, as always, a flawless performance from the inimitable Ray Porter. Being a sentient spaceship really should be more fun. But after spreading out through space for almost a century, Bob and his clones just can't stay out of trouble. They've created enough colonies so humanity shouldn't go extinct.

Lost steam as it went along
Revisado: 04-24-18
The humor and immediacy of the first simmered out during the second installment and wasn’t rekindled much by the third. While still entertaining, the series certainly suffered from a sophomore slump.
