The story had some great moments, but I agree with everyone that it kind of crossed the border to ridiculous. I'm from Florida and grew up there, and in book one I was thinking how many people I knew just like the author described. Book two got a little silly-I won't list any spoilers, but in a couple places I was shaking my head thinking "Really?".

I, like others, was disappointed in the narrator. Every line had the same cadence and you couldn't tell when we were changing from scene to scene. He tried with the voices, but his accents were off and he made people sound like they were chuckling in the middle of dramatic moments. He just wasn't able to pull off performance narration, he was just reading the book. Every single sentence had the emphasis on the last word and it made it really hard to get into enjoying the story. I appreciate his efforts but he might want to work on that a little bit. The narrator wasn't the worst I've ever heard, but I think I might buy the paperback for the next one and just read it myself.

The book is a classic, but Andy Serkis's narration really made it come alive. Having read the book and seen the movie, I hadn't intended to buy the audiobook. I caught it on a daily deal for next to nothing and I'm so glad I did! Andy Serkis makes listening to this book well worth the money. A consummate story teller, he really made me feel like I was there in the adventure with Bilbo and the rest. His character voices were spot on, and fit each one perfectly just like I would have expected them to sound. If you like Tolkien, it's well worth the investment to pick up this edition.

Pretty funny, heavy parody of Lord of the Rings, but was overall entertaining on a long car ride and would be appropriate for children to.

Cave Paintings

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 01-10-18

At first it was interesting. Then not. Let me sum up: They went into a cave. There is a painting of a horse in red ocher. Then there is a painting of another horse. There is a painting of a mammoth. Then three horses. And two mammoths. And a rhinoceros. Another horse, only this one is black. A mammoth is facing the horse. Now a rhinocerous. Turn the corner of the cave into another room. There is a painting of two horses. There is a painting of a rhinoceros above the horses. There are two mammoths facing each other and a horse. This cave has a megaceros. Turn the corner. There is a painting of a horse. There is a painting of two horses. There are two more mammoths facing each other. There is a rhinoceros above the mammoth. A leopard. Enter another cave. There is a painting of a horse. There is a painting of a mammoth. There is another painting of a mammoth. There are two mammoths. There are five mammoths all facing left and two mammoths facing right. Turn the corner. There is a painting of a horse. For hour after hour after hour, with no insight or point...

Between that and the repetition of Ayla's childhood story in detail to every new person they met (it would have been far more pleasant if she had just said "Ayla told her childhood story" rather than repeat it every single time), familial names and ties, and the mother's song, this book was almost painful. It is page after page of uninteresting filler. I keep going on waiting for a point, but I think I am about to do something I have never done in my life: give up on a book without finishing it.

Combine that with a terrible narrator who does not know how to pause for punctuation, paragraphs or chapters and you have a long confusing ramble. The narrator does not know how to use her voice to control the story and indicate changes in topic or storyline to the reader through inflection. She doesn't speak in a monotone, but when you can't tell the difference between a comma and a chapter change it leads to a lot of confusion. She suddenly completely changes topic with no break, running from paragraph to paragraph or chapter to chapter with no pause; or leaves long pauses while still within the same paragraph. It was frustrating trying to keep up with her and with the story.

I think Jean Auel is a fabulous author and I loved the first books in the series. The amount of research she did was truly impressive and the way she wove it into a captivating tale was amazing. I have a feeling if I visited these caves I could actually use this story as a guidebook to the paintings and each one would be in exactly the place described. But hour after hour simply describing which painting is on which wall is tedious and dull.

This story feels very much like her contract required she produce a sixth book after she had finished her story, and she had to come up with 700 pages when she had nothing left to say. This 34 hours would have been better as a chapter or two in another story.
