'Jesus is the answer. ''God has a perfect plan for your life.' 'All sins are equal.' Sayings like these may make catchy bumper stickers, but as deep, life-changing truths they fall short. They are the earmarks of 'folk religion'---a badly distorted pop-Christianity that thrives on cliches and slogans and resists reflection and examination.

Premise Good...But Not Executed Well
Revisado: 03-28-24
There were some things I really liked about thus book, but the frontal attack on Calvinism and Evangelicals was unnecessary.
Skip this one and go directly to his recommendation in the conclusion to read C.S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity".

Historia
First published in 1873, The Gilded Age is both a biting satire and a revealing portrait of post-Civil War America - an age of corruption when crooked land speculators, ruthless bankers, and dishonest politicians voraciously took advantage of the nation's peacetime optimism. With his characteristic wit and perception, Mark Twain and his collaborator, Charles Dudley Warner, attack the greed, lust, and naiveté of their own time in a work that endures as a valuable social document and one of America's most important satirical novels.

Great Story, but Audio Quality Not Always Good
Revisado: 02-27-24
The basis of this book--corruption and greed--are an age-old story, and Ttwain could have written a similar storyline today. A serious subject, but told through Twain's wry wit and humor! Thoroughly enjoyable!
However, there are portions of the reading with so much static they are fairly "unlistenable".
In one chapter, the reader can hear birds singing in the background...which bothered me not at all!

Historia
Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Such a lovely story! I could have done without the graphic love scenes and vulgar portions, but a sweet idea told in an entertaining manner.

Historia
He is a man capable of abandoning two sailors in an open boat, yet he is an avid and thoughtful reader of the moral philosophers. He is Wolf Larsen, captain of the seal-hunting Ghost and the unforgettable protagonist of one of the world's great sea novels. Tormented by his own convictions, Larsen is an enigma both fascinating and repellent to his reluctant crewman, Humphrey Van Weyden. Throughout their long and perilous voyage together, the captain's ruthless belief in the survival of the fittest is pitted against Van Weyden's "civilization".

A lovely "sequel" to "Call of the Wild". Anyone who loves dogs will appreciate the validity of London's doggo attributes and behaviors.

Revisado: 05-12-23
My 2nd recent Michener saga. Trying to keep up with all of the islands and characters made this a somewhat troublesome listen.
Lots of gore...which is probably accurate, and quite a bit of derogatory language...probably also accurate.
Pretty good Reagan impression!
