Historia
Hugh Howey is known for crafting riveting and immersive tales of boundless imagination. Now comes Machine Learning, an impressive collection of Howey's science fiction and fantasy short fiction, including three stories set in the world of Wool, two never-before-published tales written exclusively for this volume, and 15 additional stories collected here for the first time. These stories explore everything from artificial intelligence to parallel universes to video games, and each story is accompanied by an author's note.

Mixed quality, but some good stuff
Revisado: 03-25-25
Despite Audible including this under Silo series, the one Silo-universe story adds little to the series, and arguably takes away as it is ultimately a dud with a disappointing ending. Still, several others are good sci-fi and worth the read.

Crude, hackish, poorly narrated
Revisado: 01-06-25
Narrator is pretty awful — lifeless and unvaried — but he has very little to work with. The story seems written from the idle fantasies of a kid in class, lacking depth, having little practicality, and generally 3rd rate.

Malrosa is a princess of the Athanatos, powerful immortal insect people who have been systematically assaulting Vita's island for years. When Vita ends up fusing her soul with her, the resulting gestalt must struggle to reconcile her conflicting viewpoints and beliefs. Now in love with two homes and full of perspective her old self lacked, Vita must bring peace between warring islands... and if there's one thing Vita has always been bad with, it's peace. This is the fourth and final book of Vigor Mortis.

mid-book detour into therapy and philosophy
Revisado: 08-30-24
While I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this series, and this particular book ends well, the middle of this book takes a pretty long detour to into philosophical analysis, before plunging into therapy sessions for the characters. If you’ve been dying to eavesdrop on a social worker’s day dreams, you may enjoy this section, but frankly as a story telling structure, it’s pretty inferior to the fast and fun pace of the other books.

Casting necromancy without ever learning how to isn't supposed to be possible. A starving orphan girl named Vita is somehow managing it anyway, and she's not sure if this is going to be the solution to her life's problems or a horrifying, spiraling mess of problems she can hardly conceive.

Great world building and SPECTACULAR narration
Revisado: 02-18-24
The story is great, the main character relatable and like-able, and the world building is first class. But I’m not here to remind you of how unique the world the author built is, nor how novel and incredibly charming the main character is, nor even how enjoyable the writing was. No, I took the time to write yet-another glowing review for this book because my jaded self was so impressed with the unexpectedly incredible performance the narrator gave us! Each character got a voice befitting them, none more so than the main character, but I’ve seen that before. The reading was lively and energetic, befitting the characters, and the narration was remarkably clean, with no mispronunciations, hesitations, or stumbling, but that’s expected for any good narrator. What truly impressed me was how much life she injected into the story. This isn’t narration, it’s performance, and what a performance! Everything is delivered exactly how the characters themselves would had they leapt off the pages, with all the emphasis, energy, quirks, and personality a real person would manifest. All this without falling into that off uncanny valley found in ‘dramatized’ editions… With the author’s excellent prose and this narrator’s evocative performance, this book was entirely too entertaining. Why are you still reading this instead of listening to this book?!?

weak Fantasy set to Sci-Fi
Revisado: 04-19-23
Despite being set in space, in the future, this is less a science fiction story, than a vague mishmash of fantasy elements. It’s mostly a romanticized version of Templar knights in space, with bits of WWII and other stuff leaking in. It’s generally shallow and incoherent, but of nonsense like soldiers in mech suits cutting up each others’ mechs with physical swords and (once) a halberd. It sure the author was aware that even knights in plate armor used their swords (when they used swords) as pry bars and to poke around plate edges, not to slice through plate armor (or even mail). Having a mech’s sword — a giant one metal one, of course, and an unfolding one, somehow — cut through not just unarmored troops, but future tanks and other armored mechs is just silly. As with most of this book, little has been thought through. It’s most shallow action scenes loosely linked with often vague storylines.
Some bright points: some of the subplots are good, and the back story, if time had been taken to really craft it into a cohesive background, there are some interesting and unique story points.
If you are here for the Armor, though, there are much better written books out there.

Historia
Gram lives in the long shadow cast by his father, the late hero Dorian Thornbear. Struggling to find his place in a world where politics and wizardry appear to have replaced the need for men of might and main, he must make his own mark. Trapped within the seemingly safe confines of Castle Cameron, Gram faces both love and tragedy. His choices will not only define himself but serve to remind others of his family's legacy and the reason only a fool threatens those a Thornbear protects.

High points missing flesh
Revisado: 01-10-23
This is a side-series to another; perhaps a side-series off another side-series. As such, much is assumed and never explained, presumably because those questions would be known if you’d all the others. Even elements happening in this story are more presumed than shown, like the relationship between two best friends that is stated but never demonstrated in their limited interactions. The overall effect is that nothing feels fleshed out, neither the world, nor the characters, nor the motivation for the story. What does make it into this book is not enough to justify the story, though you can see a glimmer of it’s charm if you knew all the greater context. Perhaps recommended for fans of the other series, but cannot hold it’s own otherwise.

Historia
Eco-terrorists unleash the worst attack the world has ever seen. Over 25,000 autonomous combat drones are released in Manhattan. Hundreds of thousands are dead, and the entire island is evacuated and quarantined in just a few days' time. Ten years later, Manhattan is still empty of humans, with the exception of the salvage specialists of the most watched reality show in history: Zone War. Produced live and unedited, the show follows five teams of armored vehicle specialists who brave the active drones to recover lost riches and collect bounties on dead ones.

Fun, despite flawed precepts
Revisado: 10-25-22
The setup of this story is broken, to the point of straining my ability to suspend disbelief… but if you can do it, the story is fun and enjoyable. Despite wincing at some points of ridiculousness, I find I’d still want to read the next in the series.

In the more shadowy corners of the world, frequented by angels and demons and everything in between, Laytham Ballard is a legend. It's said he raised the dead at the age of 10, stole the Philosopher's Stone in Vegas back in 1999, and survived the bloodsucking kiss of the Mosquito Queen. Wise in the hidden ways of the night, he's also a cynical bastard who stopped thinking of himself as the good guy a long time ago.

Drearier Dresden
Revisado: 10-21-22
There are interesting elements here — not least of which was the captivating performance of Bronson Pinchot — but all of it is dragged down by the relentless darkness, painting everything drab and depressing. The main character isn’t an anti- or reluctant-hero; he’s mostly just an amoral (generally immoral) ass. The world is equally dark and bitter, and really there’s not a lot else to salvage this book. It wasn’t terrible, but it was flat, and there’s a lot of better work out there (eg, Butcher’s Dresden Files) that are far more satisfying.

Mediocre rendition of rehashed YA urban fantasy
Revisado: 10-09-22
Yet another using the young Mary Sue, not too pretty but all the boys are in love with her, but everything revolves around her because she’s special. Other series have pulled this off better, but the story here is lousy with plot holes and lazy writing. I could run down for you the extensive flaws of the book in some detail, but I’ve already wasted enough on this book. Would recommend you try another series instead.
