slow....really slow
Revisado: 02-28-25
I like Yasmin Angoe's Knight series, so I thought I'd try this as something different. This heroine is too flawed.

Good story...bad narrator
Revisado: 01-12-25
I struggled to get through the book, not because of the storyline. The story itself was quite satisfying however, the narration was so distracting because her cadence was delayed. Anyway, read the book yourself...you'll be much more satisfied.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

I thought I was reading Numbers or Deuteronomy. It's a wonderful story about regular people. I struggled a bit to finish, but I learned some good lessons. Amen!

There's no diversity in these books. I enjoy the storyline, but I wish some of the MAIN characters represented more color.

Joan Vassar's Black Saga deserves TV time. You can't help but to fall in love with all the characters . Thank you for such a detailed depiction of life... mixing fiction with historical facts is beautiful, not to mention the romance.

Historia
Ike Randolph has been out of jail for fifteen years, with not so much as a speeding ticket in all that time. But a Black man with cops at the door knows to be afraid. The last thing he expects to hear is that his son Isiah has been murdered, along with Isiah’s white husband, Derek. Ike had never fully accepted his son but is devastated by his loss. Derek’s father Buddy Lee was almost as ashamed of Derek for being gay as Derek was ashamed his father was a criminal. Buddy Lee still has contacts in the underworld, though, and he wants to know who killed his boy.

So Good!
Revisado: 03-15-22
At first... I hated how the author writes in a cadence like bullet points but it gives a great visual. The story line is slightly predictable but the relationship between the main characters is reminiscent of Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in reverse. The little bits of humor were some of the best quips I ever heard, I want to put them in my mental rolodex for future use. The narrator was great as usual. Overall, I throughly enjoyed the book and there are important messages in the story for this world.

I almost gave up at first, but I finished. I love how JV draws you in and the pictures she paints with her writing but I'm just not sure how I feel about these characters. Anyway, I'm willing to give the next installment a gander when it comes out because I'm curious.

Fun & refreshing
Revisado: 04-26-21
Slightly comical and suspenseful. I just love the "girl power" the narrator is great and she works well for the character. I just hate that I can hear her when she swallows or takes a deep breath.(sound editing could be better).

Revisado: 12-15-20
Ashley writes like a poet, it's beautiful. I just wanted a little more substance, which eventually came in the back half. Nicole delivered an amazing performance as usual. I am in love with this series and Ashley Antoinette has a dedicated fan in me... can't wait for the next one.
