Historia
Nigel Havers is the real-life charmer you might expect. In a career that has taken him from a schoolboy production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" to the red carpet on Oscar Night with "Chariots of Fire", via starring roles in the West End stage, classic television series like "Don't Wait Up" and a cameo in "Little Britain", the Hollywood blockbusters that made him a household name are only the beginning.

I was enjoying this book so much but it stopped so abruptly. I wish the unabridged version was available, since Sir Nigel does such a splendid job reading this book.

Historia
As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and author. In this New York Times bestselling biography, Eric Metaxas takes both strands of Bonhoeffer's life—the theologian and the spy—and draws them together to tell a searing story of incredible moral courage in the face of monstrous evil.

Interesting Biography but Narrator Issues
Revisado: 03-28-25
I was very interested in learning more about Dietrich Bonhoeffer. This book was overall very well written, but at times quite repetitive. It gave interesting insight into how the rise of Naziism affected everyday German people, in a way that I had not heard before. I am glad I listened, but admit that the narrator was an issue for me. First, he reads so faux-dramatically, that I had to speed it up to 1.1x to make it listenable for me. Secondly, as an American who speaks German, he was inconsistent and incorrect in his pronunciation of Bonhoeffer's name. In this book, he pronounced it at least three ways -- Bon-Ho-Fur, Bon-Hoof-er, and Bon-hoff-er. Really got on my nerves. Recommend this book if you are interested in Bonhoeffer, Lutheranism, Germany or history from 1914 - 1945.

Historia
In March of 1603, as she helps to nurse the dying Queen Elizabeth of England, Frances Gorges dreams of her parents’ country estate, where she has learned to use flowers and herbs to become a much-loved healer. She is happy to stay at home when King James of Scotland succeeds to the throne. His court may be shockingly decadent, but his intolerant Puritanism sees witchcraft in many of the old customs - punishable by death.

Less enjoyable than her other books
Revisado: 05-18-24
I agree with other reviewers; the usually very good narrator did an awful job of trying to do a Spanish accent for Carlos. I wish she had just not tried an accent at all for him. While I loved and admired Betsy’s character, I was not a fan of Jenna. Overall the book felt a bit incomplete. I would have liked an epilogue.

Interesting New Information About These Two Women
Revisado: 04-16-24
Tracy Borman’s narration was excellent. While explaining the circumstances that surrounded these two women, Tracy provides additional interesting information. I enjoyed the unique focus on how Anne’s short life influenced Elizabeth so much. Highly recommended.

At first, I was not sure I would like this book. Started slow. As the story progressed, I became more and more engrossed in the story. At the end, this story was well worth the time. It even has some real moments of wisdom. Recommended!

Not for me
Revisado: 09-21-23
This story just did not hold my interest. It would have a good chapter and then go off on a tangent that sounded like a long government report. Got bored and did not finish it.
