Good Content But Intermediate Level
Revisado: 07-26-24
Quick-paced and upbeat program with a good variety of language topics. However, I would not consider these lessons “advanced,” rather, intermediate.

Historia
Every novelist dreams of it - writing the book that rockets to the top of the best-seller lists. Now, they can see how it's done, up close, in an audiobook by an agent who has sold manuscripts that turned into hits. Here Albert Zuckerman covers the essential elements of the blockbuster novel and shows writers how to put them to work in their books. Zuckerman covers the subject thoroughly, from creating outlines and building larger than life characters to injecting suspense and more.

A Masterclass for Novelists
Revisado: 07-22-24
I read this book 20 years ago, and recently discovered the Audible version. Zuckerman’s insights into the publishing industry are illuminating, and his critical analyses of ‘The Godfather,’ ‘Gone with the Wind,’ and two more bestsellers are authoritative and always interesting. This book is equal to a semester or more in an MFA in creative writing program.

Historia
North America was settled by people with distinct religious, political, and ethnographic characteristics, creating regional cultures that have been at odds with one another ever since. Subsequent immigrants didn't confront or assimilate into an "American" or "Canadian" culture, but rather into one of the 11 distinct regional ones that spread over the continent each staking out mutually exclusive territory. In American Nations, Colin Woodard leads us on a journey through the history of our fractured continent....

How to Write a Movie
Revisado: 12-12-20
If I had to choose one screenwriting method, it would be this. Fortunately it jives with other structure classics by McKee, Field, Vogler and Truby. By far the most fun and practical approach to formulaic storytelling. Great narration makes this audiobook a real treasure.

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Platitudinal Hubris
Revisado: 11-24-20
A memoir ought to scrape bottom of its narrator's soul, but McConaughey cherry picks his memories and candies them with hindsight. He caricatures Southerners, especially his parents, as if witnessing their chronic bloody domestic violence would not traumatize a boy, but rather wisen and season him. The whole book feels like a sales pitch, hard to believe.

Historia
In A History of the Bible, John Barton argues that the Bible is not a prescription to a complete, fixed religious system, but rather a product of a long and intriguing process, which has inspired Judaism and Christianity, but still does not describe the whole of either religion. Barton shows how the Bible is indeed an important source of religious insight for Jews and Christians alike, yet argues that it must be listened to in its historical context - from its beginnings in myth and folklore to its many interpretations throughout the centuries....

Casts Doubt on Scripture
Revisado: 01-29-20
The author uses the benign nature of scholarly tone to cast seeds of doubt all over the Bible. His not-so-subtle rhetoric paints the Torah and the Gospels alike as collections of myths and fairy tales with conflicting narratives with unverifiable authorship. The narrator at first reminded me of Piglet from 'Winnie the Pooh,' so I mistook his sly little pokes and jabs at biblical authenticity for empathy or at least credulity; but in time he sounded snide and scoffing and I was sure Richard Dawkins himself was behind the microphone, frothing at the mouth, here to deride the Bible's stories and their believers. My faith is weak enough as it is, and I was looking for something academic AND supportive to edify my relationship with God. This is book is not it. It is also rather boring and wholly uninspired.

Historia
Today there are three million homeless people in the US and almost 20 million vacant homes. The most technologically advanced nation in the world has a life expectancy lower than that of Chile and Bahrain. And citizens of the wealthiest country on the planet continue to ingest toxic chemicals through their food, their vaccines, and even their water. America, Jim Marrs argues, has been seized by a culture of death. And who promulgates this culture? The globalist masters of the G.O.D. syndicate - guns, oil, and drugs.

Scary Movie Trailer Narrator
Revisado: 01-18-20
This title has many eye-opening facts and insights, but I can only tolerate the narrator for a few minutes. He reads every sentence like it's a nightmare, with no variation in tone or cadence. He also mispronounces words as if there is no quality check during production.

Ridiculous Voices
Revisado: 10-12-19
Some of the voice actors are terrific, but far too many are melodramatic, phony, or just plain grating and do not belong recording audiobooks. The chapters are broken up in a confusing way, making it difficult to read along in a Bible. The music and sound effects are very good, and the book of Job alone makes this title a must-have.
