Historia
With The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors and Ship of Ghosts, James D. Hornfischer created essential and enduring narratives about America’s World War II Navy, works of unique immediacy distinguished by rich portraits of ordinary men in extremis and exclusive new information. Now he does the same for the deadliest, most pivotal naval campaign of the Pacific war: Guadalcanal. Neptune’s Inferno is at once the most epic and the most intimate account ever written of the contest for control of the seaways of the Solomon Islands.

Historia
On August 5, 1942, giant pillars of dust rose over the Russian steppe, marking the advance of the 6th Army, an elite German combat unit dispatched by Hitler to capture the industrial city of Stalingrad and press on to the oil fields of Azerbaijan. The Germans were supremely confident; in three years, they had not suffered a single defeat. The Luftwaffe had already bombed the city into ruins. German soldiers hoped to complete their mission and be home in time for Christmas.

Good account of the battle of Stalingrad
Revisado: 08-09-16
I enjoyed the authors coverage of the battle which seem balanced to both sides involved.
Not just limited to the strategy of the battle the tales of survival and the individual strength of men and women directly involved gave me since of what really occurred.

What did you love best about Preparation for the Next Life?
How author painted each setting in words. You really could picture it in your mind form the descriptions.
What does Robertson Dean bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Dean keeps you interested by bring the characters to life with with different tones and inflections he uses. Not just reading the words but acting them.
Who was the most memorable character of Preparation for the Next Life and why?
Skinner to me was the most memorable character. He was so trouble and tormented and never could really face up to his problems before it was too late.

Historia
From Afghanistan and Pakistan to Yemen, Somalia, and beyond, Scahill speaks to the CIA agents, mercenaries, and elite Special Operations Forces operators who populate the dark side of American war-fighting. He goes deep into al Qaeda-held territory in Yemen and walks the streets of Mogadishu with CIA-backed warlords. We also meet the survivors of US night raids and drone strikes - including families of US citizens targeted for assassination by their own government - who reveal the human consequences of the dirty wars the United States struggles to keep hidden.

Compelling, informative, balanced

Would you listen to Dirty Wars again? Why?
I started out thinking this book would be a total bashing of the Bush administration but the author was balanced in his treatment of current and past administrations.
Additionally it gave me a much better understanding of how the Executive branch of the US government has managed to side step most of the review process put in place at the end of the Vietnam war to control covert operations. It was real eye opener to hear how little hard evidence is required before a drone strike can be order and how little concern within administration there is for collateral damage and deaths caused by the strikes.

Historia
One of the greatest examples of war journalism ever written, Michael Herr's clearheaded yet unsparing retellings of the day-to-day events in Vietnam take on the force of poetry, finding clarity in one of the most incomprehensible events in our modern era. A National Book Critics Circle finalist and highly acclaimed upon its first publication, Dispatches still retains its resonance as America finds itself amidst another military quagmire.

Great read, very interesting, Thought provoking
Revisado: 05-05-10
I have listen over the last couples of months with fascination. The reading is well paced not monotone. The scientific explanations are will written and easy to understand.
I have really enjoyed this audio book and would recommend it just for the historical perspective alone. It provides a startling and sometimes grotesque picture in words on subject almost forgotten by today generations.
Makes you think before saying “just nuke them”.
