As an Outlander fan, I would have purchased this book even if it were a shallow celeb love-fest. But thankfully, it was not. This book is full of wonderful tales of Scottish history and places, washed down with fun banter between these two friends. I have a hard copy of the book but highly recommend the audiobook, as you get to listen two Sam and Graham express their love for Scotland, dish behind the scenes Outlander stories and banter about topics from whisky to their friendly rivalry. Highly recommended!

Pillars of the Earth is one of my all-time favorite books. The sequels and now this prequel have not risen to that height, but this one especially is entertaining and well worth the read. Like the others, it features a strong female lead, a clever builder, a few villains and several interesting supporting characters.

This production is a sweet, funny, well written play with an all star cast. What a gift to us from Audible!

Since the Hulu series came out, there has been a lot of attention paid to this story. I had read it when it first came out in the 80s but current events have lent an eerie overlay to the story. How far is it really from regulating women's bodies, reducing access to health care and passing voter laws to completely controlling women and reproduction and punishing those who rebel? How far away are we from having a future academician describe the United States and Iran as "early 20th century theocracies"?

I highly recommend the book and this performance.

The Cabin Pressure series is hands down the funniest radio series I've ever experienced. All of the characters are superb, the comedy is BRILLIANT, and the acting is pitch perfect.

I wish I didn't have Tina Fey's perfect memoir to compare this with, but I do, and so there it is. I admire Amy Poehler, but her more acerbic style and tendency to descend into self-pity made this less than perfect, but still entertaining.

I knew that Anderson Cooper was Gloria Vanderbilt's son, but I never expected that this would be, in essence, the interview of his life. Via e-mail exchanges, Anderson and Gloria communicate...he slowly allows her to reveal some of the personal stories of her very public and tumultuous life, and we get to know both of them as ordinary people who grew up in extraordinary circumstances. I loved every minute.

Maybe my expectations were too high...

I expected so much from this book after hearing people talk about it and what a tear-jerker it was. Maybe I should have read it instead of listening to it - in the slower paced audio format I had time to think about how underdeveloped and one dimensional the characters were. My experience was certainly affected by the poor narration - I almost gave up because of the Noah Taylor's low voice and tendency to drop the ends of his sentences.

What a wonderful surprise. This book is not a typical, event by event "my life" memoir by a famous actor, but an intriguing (and sometimes suspenseful) story well told. Alan Cumming cleverly uses the occasion of his appearance on a British genealogy show to unravel intriguing bits and pieces of his family's history and his relationship with his father. The journey is not always happy, but it is beautifully written and sincerely acted by the author. Highly recommend!

Expected more from Chevalier

I've read several books by Tracy Chevalier and this is my least favorite. It is fairly shallow, given the fact that the subject matter could have lent itself to much more depth. Chevalier's previous books which factionalized artistic subjects were much more intriguing. There was an opportunity to do more with the quilt code, the historic relationship of the Amish to the Underground Railroad, and even the role of the women who put their lives and marriages on the line to help runaway slaves.

Perhaps the reason this book felt so shallow to me was the affected performance of Kate Reading. After a couple of chapters, I nearly gave up, but persevered, only to discover that the narrator never lost the affected tone and irritating habit of ending every sentence with an upward tilt to the voice like a question.
