4.25-4.5 stars
Revisado: 05-03-24
I know some of the reviews are mixed because some people think this one was boring, but I absolute loved it. Like all of Tana French’s books, the atmosphere and setting are more than just well-written—you feel saturated by them, like they’re a living, breathing thing. And the characters, as always, are all so real and complex, and often quirky, frustrating, or just someone you can’t help rooting for. Was it a slow burn for a lot of the beginning? Yes. But it was never boring. Just a steady, inevitable, movement toward the next difficulty or disaster. The style of writing perfectly fit the place, people, and movement of the plot. Highly recommend, and the narration was outstanding.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

3.75 stars—I’m conflicted
Revisado: 02-11-24
This one was tricky to rate. I’m giving it 3.75 stars because, while it had all of the fun things I signed up for (magic, fantasy, fast-paced plot, fight-to-the-death dragon rider school, enemies-to-lovers trope), I felt the conflicts were forced and therefore the story lacked the necessary tension (beyond the “will she survive” tension). The misunderstandings and insecurities were not believable, and the biggest one at the climax didn’t pull me in because it was too much of a stretch. As a result, the underlying story (beneath the somewhat unique premise) felt unoriginal and weak. That said, it had all the other fun elements I was in the mood for, so I haven’t ruled out reading the next book in the series. But I’ll know not to expect more than I’m likely to get. On the bright side, the narration is terrific.

Loved it!
Revisado: 08-23-23
I really enjoyed this story! There were some parts that seemed to drag a little in the middle (e.g., I didn’t think we needed to spend *so* much time on one of the side characters from the middle of the timeline when he didn’t end up being crucial to anything in the plot), but the rest was so good, especially now it all was revealed at the end, that I still think it’s a solid 4-star book. As always, Kate Morton excels at creating an immersive setting and compelling characters. The narration is also terrific.

Outstanding!
Revisado: 06-27-23
I can’t believe it took me so long to read (listen to) this. Maybe because I thought the “making a deal with the devil” and immortality were overdone and couldn’t be original, but I was absolutely wrong. This book was original, beautifully written, emotional without being heavy, and just overall fanciful and fun. And I love everything this narrator reads. She makes the characters in this book come alive. Highly recommend!

Really well done
Revisado: 04-21-23
4.5 stars. What make this psychological suspense novel different than others is the emotion. When a character suffers something terrible (no spoilers) I was devastated, right along with the character, and it stayed with me through the book. The complexity of the characters was also really well done, making you conflicted about how to feel about them. And, of course, there was the tension and suspense — and dread — of what might happen next. Highly recommend, but know going in it could be a lot more sad than you’d predict from the genre. The narration was also terrific. Just the right voice and tone and delivery for this story.

Gorgeous
Revisado: 04-03-23
Jeff Zentner will grab your heartstrings from the first page and hold tight long after you’ve finished reading. His books are pure emotion, from the characters to the setting to the very story itself. He makes you want to savor every moment, and at the same time you can’t put his stories down and have to race until the end. In the Wild Light is no exception. Can’t recommend highly enough. And the audiobook version makes it even more wonderful. I would listen to Michael Crouch read the dictionary, and he’d probably have me tearing up at some point—he never fails to capture the very essence of the characters and mood of a story. 5 stars.

Only the ending made it round to 4 stars
Revisado: 03-29-23
3.5-3.75 stars. I usually love Kate Morton’s books, but this one didn’t quite measure up for me. I was going to rate it 3.5 and round down to 3 stars in the rating up until the very end. The end brought it up for me because of its unexpected and clever reveal and satisfying finish. But the rest of the book felt like it wandered and meandered too much and could’ve done with cutting about a quarter of it. Also, I just couldn’t make myself like the main character, Dorothy. I don’t mind, and often enjoy “unlikeable” characters, but I felt this one had no redeeming qualities and was overall just annoying. It’s a personal thing and others may disagree. But combined with the lack of focus that made many parts drag, I was at a 3.5 rating until the very end. The narrator was very good, though.

Great story and terrific narration
Revisado: 02-13-23
A few reviewers didn’t like the narrator, but I think they wrote their review based on a very short excerpt at the beginning of the book. Luckily, I was familiar with Kirby Heyborne, and he did not disappoint! I’d listen to him read anything—he has so much emotion in the way he reads, and it turns out he’s great at doing many different accents, too! The story was also great; maybe even better than the first, which I had read but didn’t listen to. I’m looking forward to listening to the 3rd book!

One of the best books I’ve listened to in years
Revisado: 11-16-22
5 stars. This is one of the best books I’ve read (listened to) in years, and I’ve read a lot of great books in that time. This novel is perfection: beautiful, poetic and lyrical language; rich world-building that puts you right in the setting, walking alongside the characters; a page-turning plot that is at once chilling, heartbreaking, and uplifting; and a story and characters that get under your skin and will have you thinking about them long after you set the audiobook aside. The narration is also very good. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Everyone should read it.
