What did I learn about Jack Reacher

What is my main takeaway from this book? Jack Reacher is a pedophile who as a younger man pleasured himself fantasizing about having sex with the 15 yo daughter his best friend and commanding officer. This book is the worst kind of trash. Delving into misogyny and fantasies about abuse of underage girls as a positive plot point. I don't need to know what Reacher fantasizes about in his bed at night alone, especially when it's about your commander and best friend's 15 year old daughter. If this is the kind of garbage that passes as literature, then I don't want any part of it, How did this series get so popular? Lee Child definitely needs therapy if this is how he thinks relationships happen.

The Old Man got old fast

The story concerns a decorated Vietnam veteran who went to work for some unnamed government agency after the war, He foiled the robbery of 25 million dollars that had been earmarked for a rebel group in Libya. Afterword he is disavowed by the agency and cut loose for reasons. Fast forward 35 years and he's still on the run with the 25 mil and two dogs. This all takes place in the first chapter and the rest of the book is about is about his continued survival and staying out of the hands of the multiple governments trying to kill him.

The old man is never a sympathetic character; he uses people for his own purpose, then discards them when he has no more use for them including the pets he's supposed to love more than anything. Then there are several vignettes where his pursuers get close and he does something to get away just in the nick of time. This got tiresome after a while. There was very little action if any and it felt like it was included just to pad the book.

I felt like quitting this book several times, but I stuck it out in hope the ending would be spectacular enough to make up for the thin story. That was a mistake, The ending was as boring and flat as the rest of the book, it left open questions unanswered and was a sincere disappointment.

I don't recommend this book, it's slow and drags on with no real point, no action, no conclusion and no thrills. With all the choices out there, I recommend skipping this one.

A disparate collection of thoughts trying unsuccessfully to form a cohesive plot. it would have been better served if it had been two separate books more fleshed-out and complete. Verity is still a child, but her portrayal in this book with her extremely short fuse and no compassion and constantly throwing unfounded accusations at Stone seemed way out of place for her character. the story itself was destroying it. There was one scene where parody used her magic to throw a zombie across the room using his clothes since magic wouldn't work on the body. she immediately forgot she could do that and never use that technique again. nor did Stone. I'm really hoping the next book in the series does better than this one. my first disappointment for the Alastair Stone Chronicles. A note to R,L. King. I'm not sure if you know the definition of 'demanded'. You use it constantly, several times per chapter at time. "'Pass the salt,' Jason demanded." is not a correct usage of the word, Please stop using it every time two people have an interaction, Words like 'asked', 'inquired', 'pressed', 'exclaimed', 'chided', 'said' are all valid alternatives, Please invest in a thesaurus.

it went a bit long, and I feel the ending was somewhat unsatisfying. I did like the Robie and Reel crossover though.

I'm always looking forward to more stories in the Alastair Stone Chronicles. This one felt more like a setup then an actual story. the ending was very abrupt and left open-ended. Hopefully it'll pay off in the future.

Unless the guy you're talking about is 12 years old or suffering from a mental disability. I saw a picture of Rick Gualtieri online and he didn't look like a prepubescent junior high school dropout, but he certainly writes like one. This series had a lot of potential but the constant litany of childish dialog got to be too much. I think I gave up after "Turd" became a running joke for 1/2 the book. The narration didn't help either. So many mispronounced words it quickly became annoying. The editing was subpar as well.

Peter Grant ripoff.

This book and it's premise seems to be a rip-off of the Peter Grant series by Ben Aaronvitch, though not nearly as well done or enjoyable. The main character is an annoying moron, a loser with no redeeming qualities at all. And, as he's narrating the story, the constant whining ultimately grates on the ears like nails on a chalkboard. There is a constant attempt at humor throughout the book that falls so flat that the reader (or listener) is left not knowing whether they were supposed to laugh or not.

The secondary characters are a bit more engaging, although the titular Inspector Hobbes is written as this seeming ancient being that has interacted with humanity for scores of years, but has no idea how people are supposed to engage with one another. Another attempt at humor.

Personally, I am not continuing with this series and to anyone else, I suggest a pass altogether. If you're interested in detective stories with a supernatural flair set in merry old England, I would highly suggest the Peter Grant novels. They are far superior.

Not up to Baldacci's previous work. The plot was thin and the scenarios were ridiculous and unbelievable. Not a good outing.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I enjoyed the premise as it's easy to put yourself in the position of the antagonist and imagine what you would do if your intellect suddenly increased by an order of magnitude.

Any additional comments?

What frustrated me most about this novel was the fact that this person with supposedly infinite intelligence kept making the most stupid and ridiculous decision. It kind of pulled me out of the story.

Would you listen to Dogs of War again? Why?

Yeah I would and will probably be revisiting the entire series eventually. I think its Ray Porter that really gives these novels something more than they would have on their own.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Has to be Joe Ledger - he's narrating the entire story and he's fun to go on the adventure with.

Which character – as performed by Ray Porter – was your favorite?

I love the way Ray Porter voices Joe Ledger, so much personality comes through in his inflection and emphasis. When he voices Nicodemus (when he's Nicodemus) it give me goosebumps.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, but I wouldn't want to spoil the story.

Any additional comments?

As I have said in other reviews, I would listen to Ray Porter read a shopping list. He's one of the best, if not the best, narrators I have heard.
