Historia
From the author of Hitler: Ascent, 1889-1939 comes a riveting account of the dictator's final years, when he got the war he wanted but his leadership led to catastrophe for his nation, the world, and himself. Volker Ullrich offers fascinating new insight into Hitler's character and personality, vividly portraying the insecurity, obsession with minutiae, and narcissistic penchant for gambling that led Hitler to overrule his subordinates and then blame them for his failures.

Terrible Narration
Revisado: 09-07-22
The main mistake with this version of Hitler: Downfall is the narration. It’s hard to understand why the tenor is so different from the first book. He drags on some parts and puts odd emphasis on others. Many of the incorrect pronunciations are German words - I get it kind of but the book is about Germany so maybe ask someone? The real sore point for me was hearing this guy pronounce rabbi as “raby” as in rhymes with baby. Yikes, frankly, in light of the content! Where was the audio editor??
Incredibly difficult to focus on the book itself due to the narrator.

Historia
Cotton County, Georgia, 1930: In a house full of secrets, two babies - one light-skinned, the other dark - are born to Elma Jesup, a white sharecropper's daughter. Accused of her rape, field hand Genus Jackson is lynched and dragged behind a truck down the Twelve-Mile Straight, the road to the nearby town. In the aftermath, the farm's inhabitants are forced to contend with their complicity in a series of events that left a man dead and a family irrevocably fractured.

Too long, confusing as an audiobook
Revisado: 08-01-19
I think this title might be better served as a traditional or kindle title. The type of storytelling the author is doing does not lend itself to listening and keeping track of the story.
Story itself - not too much of a plot, more of a many-year window into how this group lives, loves, and dies in very, very small town Georgia. There are other novels out there that tell similar stories.

Historia
A jaw-dropping story of how a girl from the suburbs ends up in a prince's harem and emerges from the secret Xanadu both richer and wiser. At 18, Jillian Lauren was an NYU theater school dropout with a tip about an upcoming audition. The "casting director" told her that a rich businessman would pay pretty girls $20,000 if they stayed for two weeks to spice up his parties. Soon, Jillian was on a plane to Borneo, where she would spend the next 18 months in the harem of Prince Jefri Bolkiah....

Just OK
Revisado: 10-26-17
Enjoyed the story, very diverting and easy to listen to. The narrator’s different takes on accents was distracting, not all good. The memoir itself was full of self aggrandizement and not enough time spent on the real reflection of who she is. A lot of “better than thou” without a lot to back it up. Spends a lot of time talking about how lazy she is and how much of her time she spends trying to get out of working. Exaggerated account of time in Brunei leads the listener to believe she’s spent months there the first time; it’s actually only been a few weeks.

Historia
It is 1922, and London is tense. Ex-servicemen are disillusioned; the out-of-work and the hungry are demanding change. And in South London, in a genteel Camberwell villa, a large silent house now bereft of brothers, husband, and even servants, life is about to be transformed, as impoverished widow Mrs. Wray and her spinster daughter, Frances, are obliged to take in lodgers.

Not Historical Fiction
Revisado: 08-20-15
Seems as though most people are one of two minds on this - I was one that did not enjoy this being billed as historical fiction when it really should have been listed as romance. The story is very, very slow to start and doesn't get much better. The main issue, as other reviewers have written, is merely laid into the historical context, with no real commentary or perspective. The characters could have been written in a way that would have offered this perspective, but were not. It was a murder mystery without the whodunit aspect. It was a romance with real, but created drama, not the sort that naturally occurs in society and culture but manufactured by the characters. I kept waiting for a twist or some sort of resolution and did not get it.
