Top Shelf Arthurian Myth that could be true history
Revisado: 03-08-25
This series has been an interesting take on the King Arthur myth, told by two generations leading up to Merlin chronicling the rise and fall of Camelote. It is written in such a a way that this series could be considered a true account of one of Britain’s most famous stories rivaled only by JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series.
Very detailed. Very thorough. Very entertaining.
Plus, I’m a fan of first person narratives.

“Mother warned me about venturing outer doors.”
Revisado: 03-02-25
I’ve been a fan of the Mid Dreki Realms series for a while now, being a veteran D&D role player for decades. Rene’s series is like mother’s milk to me. He is really good at conflicting relationships. Like for example: Danika, Vidarr’s wife, is AN—NOY—ING!!! But that’s good. That is what makes this series fun!
Rene and Duffy are a great team. Concerning Duffy’s voices; I love how he does the dwarves. And how he makes the females sound is damn scary! I mean the sheer talent!
I’m looking forward to the next audiobook in the series.

And odd yet swirling series thus far
Revisado: 09-14-24
This Stephen King series is bananas! And I mean that in a good way. Very imaginative. I’d say more imaginative than any of Mr. King’s previous and future works. And he is as imaginative as he can get on a bad day.
I’m enjoying this odd yet swirling series because it is so very odd and swirling. The story, much like Roland’s world, “moves on” and I want to move on with it.
It is certainly different than other books I’ve read/listened to. Looking forward to reading/listening to the next novel in this series.

In the first book of this brilliant series, Stephen King introduces listeners to one of his most powerful creations: Roland of Gilead, The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which frighteningly mirrors our own, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake.

I never read much of Stephen King, but I took an interest with The Dark Tower. Man, Stephen can write. I remember seeing an interview years ago with Mr. King and he referred to his writing as the McDonalds of writing. DUDE! I get being humble but naw dude! Your work is not the fast food of writing. Come on!!! More like an excellent barbecue in a well groomed backyard, during twilight.
Seriously, I enjoyed this book very much and about to read the second book in the series.

The story struck like lightning
Revisado: 07-28-24
An entertaining read. Cixin Liu’s command of science fiction is evident in his imaginative approach to concepts and theories science has developed. And his character development is very good, when I was able to view the characters easily. I especially liked this book because of its first person narrative, which is my favorite point of view when reading a story. This book and the The Three Body Problem are great additions to any sci-fi fan’s library.

Historia
Thelonious "Monk" Ellison's writing career has bottomed out: his latest manuscript has been rejected by seventeen publishers, which stings all the more because his previous novels have been "critically acclaimed." He seethes on the sidelines of the literary establishment as he watches the meteoric success of We's Lives in Da Ghetto, a first novel by a woman who once visited "some relatives in Harlem for a couple of days."

This book “erases” the movie from my memory.
Revisado: 01-26-24
I have to say, the movie American Fiction despite the superb acting pals in comparison with this book it’s based on. The movie would have been a much better series on Netflix or Amazon Prime. This book holds so much more content that the movie left out. The book is deeper and the family dynamics is much more raw and the deteriorating relationships is what sets this book apart from the movie. A quarter of the book covers the second story My Pafology which is why the movie should have been a series instead. There were other shorter stories within Erasure too that should have been given some light. Monk as is the author Percival who created him is as versatile an author and academic as is the publishing world is money oriented. Erasure is an indictment on the publishing industries hypocritical “we want GREAT writing” vs “we want to SELL books,” which sadly is one in the same in as far as the business of making money is concerned. The issues authors have to face creating good work vs. needing a paycheck lengthens the rabbit hole of that hypocrisy which is unavoidable.
If anything, the movie succeeded in making me want to read/listen to Erasure and it was worth it.

Scary-Good Female Narrations
Revisado: 01-13-24
This second installment in the series hits the ground running by the second chapter. The pacing, particularly with the combat scenes are exciting and fast. The battle stratagems were well thought out and kept me guessing as to how things would turn out. Having read hundreds of these kinds of novels, I’m amazed that I can still feel anxious about such things as reading-listening combat, realism being a thing I look for most. Rene is indeed a Dungeons Master of old! As I was with the first book, In Search of Justice, I continue to be fascinated with the main protagonist, Vidarr, a reptilian the author calls a d'oglemann, mostly because a reptilian is the main protagonist. You don’t see that everyday, do you? Rene’s dwarves he calls dvaerges are reminiscent of Tolkien’s dwarves, but that is the appeal if you ask me. And yet, they also feel like Rene’s dwarves. The narrator, Duffy Webber is amazing with his accents, making the dwarves in this book three-dimensional and enjoyable to read-listen. Alongside Vidarr, I want to see more of Rene’s dvaerges. I said it before in previous reviews how scary-good Duffy does female voices. He is a beast!!! Clearly one of the best narrators in the business. Looking forward to the next audiobook in this series.

Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Neil Gaiman is an excellent narrator. He reads his own writing beautifully. And these myths are so far removed from what Marvel has done with the Norse Gods, it’s as of one has nothing to do with the other at all.

Even reptilian youths are impetuous LOL!
Revisado: 07-23-23
What I like about this story is that a troglodyte is the main character. A commonly depicted evil creature. In D&D campaigns. I’ve grown to appreciate unlikely protagonists like Vidarr.
Rene Vecka has got me gassed to play my argonian character on Elder Scrolls Online now! LOL!
And funny thing, Duffy Weber’s voice for Vidarr sounds a lot like a very young David Tenant (Doctor Who), which I found amusing and entertaining. Now I want to see an animated feature with David Tenant voicing Vidarr.
This story reads well with Duffy narrating it. His accents are on point. Also, it’s actually scary how well Duffy does female voices 😳😅! His depiction of Ingefær in particular is hysterical! She sounds exactly how I imagined her sounding when I was reading the first few chapters before purchasing the audiobook.
It’s a fun read.
