I’m a harsh critic at times. But this is one of the best WWII novels EVER
Revisado: 01-20-25
I loved that the author doesn’t try to tell a neat tidy story that’s ultimately boring. Instead, she chronicles the real life a young woman who’s making her way in the world during one of the most insane, chaotic, intense times in human history.
I found myself thinking I would’ve been just like Lily… and I imagine you will too
Don’t miss this one, it’s a BEAUTIFUL, well-told story. Narrator is terrific also
PS- I loved learning that it was also the author’s first novel, written in her 60’s and it’s motivated the story of her parent’s war.
Again, DO NOT MISS

Interesting story, good effort, but I’m sorry, for me it fell flat
Revisado: 01-15-25
The story is interesting. A disillusioned soldier in a horrible dilemma … die or kill thousands of others. Added depth because he was betrayed by his own father. Still and Morty were also compelling characters, and the parallels to Esther were clever. But, the outcome was super unrealistic bordering on silly. It felt like I endured all of the suspense only to roll my eyes. Sometimes the suspense was stretched out offensively like a soap opera… That suspense included the characters becoming so incapable of expressing their feelings, or anything for that matter, so much so that you wonder if they are low IQ…. That inability to communicate effectuated the unrealistic, syrupy barfy end.
I know the author tried and the first part of the book was terrific I. But, ultimately it fell apart, including that you hated Stella/Hadasa because she was an overly emotional idiot.
Also, the narrator was pretty good at times but she mispronounced several words, repeatedly, and that was distracting

Really great feel good novel
Revisado: 01-07-25
I’m a fan of WWII genre historical fiction. This novel is terrific! It’s light considering the subject matter. It has its share of sadness and tragedy, but also with loving, kindhearted characters, and lots of feel good moments too. I cant wait to read the next in the series

Probably a good story, utterly ruined by virtual voice
Revisado: 12-17-24
This audiobook is worse than useless. It seems to be set in England, but the characters have southern (US) accents.
The other confusing thing, is the story changes perspective (it’s told by 3 different characters, a father, his son, and I believe his daughter)… but, as each chapter begins…. There is probably a notario. To say which character is dpeakibgzzzz but virtual voice seems to have e missed those cues.
There are also cockney characters and southern (US) African American characters… you have ZERO idea what they’re saying because the words are read nonsensically by virtual voice
I usually can handle virtual authors. But, this one is AWFUL.
It’s too bad that nobody listened to it before selling it…. If anything they’d have fixed the obvious issues.
What a COMPLETE WASTE… and again, it’s probably a great story, you can glean that here and there…. But the narration causes such confusion and frustration… that it’s not worth your time
And FYI… I really tried to stick to it and listen. Got half way through and had to just give up (even got to when Simon was lost…. But I couldn’t care enough to keep listening),

Bittersweet and beautiful story
Revisado: 12-05-24
Absolutely beautiful story. A rare gem, narration fantastic! Many WWII novels are a bit trite. But this one tells a bittersweet story in a way that you can truly imagine being with the characters. I found myself wanting to know more about the characters. Highly recommend

Beautifully Written, Entirely Unique Story, well told.
Revisado: 10-18-24
First, I must say…the narrator is FANTASTIC. VERY WELL READ. The story itself is stunning, completely unique, well told, fascinating account of one woman’s life through some utterly fascinating historical times. As a young girl, Finna struggles through a horrific trauma and the Great Depression. As a young woman, she breaks her own heart overcome by fear she could never be a “normal” wife and mother. But, she then sets off on an absolutely UNREAL adventure, during WWII while using her rare talent to help the Allied Cause… I won’t say more, don’t want to give anything away, but it is a WONDERFUL, beautiful story, and well well written

Lacking in the details that make you care about the characters, or the story at all.
Revisado: 10-12-24
I’ve often loved DS novels as a guilty pleasure. I shouldn’t have bothered with this one. It’s more like a bullet pointer list of events than a novel. A long story that’s boring because nothing makes you care about the people or events (other than the incredible historic setting, which I suppose is the only reason I was able to keep going). The narrator is awful and reads each sentence like he’s at the crescendo of a suspenseful happening. Even when he’s just saying someone went to the toilet. I should have awarded even fewer stars than I did. What a waste

Sad and sorta pointless
Revisado: 09-30-24
The writing is good, paints a picture, tells a story, no unnecessary detail or trite, flowery language. But, it’s just a sad, fairly pointless story. Not much happens other than a young woman repeatedly experiencing loss, a young man, having loss and then dying.
It did feel rather pointless, but I’m sure exactly this happened to some people.
