It’s a cool vampire book. I like horror that has well-developed characters and an intelligent-sounding narrator. And this was all of those things.

And?..
Revisado: 04-22-22
Stupidest book ever! Apparently, there are people that can speak with the same inflections and accents as English 'rock star' types. And evidently that's all a book needs is a couple hours of trivial conversations all discussing their own faint recollections of each other- as if the reader is dying to know what they did because they're just so famous- we're so so so fascinated to hear what they did after they got out of bed. And then, if I can remember, since I was fairly inebriated, you see, as we all were.... and so I got up and if I do recall, I used the loo.
And I'm fairly certain that I urinated then. You see we were all so very famous, you know, and at that time, my bladder was, indeed, fairly, .. um.... how you would've called it in the states, um... Full.

Historia
On December 21, 2012, according to the Mayan Calendar, the world was supposed to end. It didn't. But on that day, 113 mysterious manuscripts were discovered around the world, each one written in blood by an unknown author. After several dozen unexplained deaths befell the finders of said manuscripts, a decision was made to lock them up for good in a secret vault beneath the Vatican. It is said that anyone who reads the stories will die, and as such they are now referred to as "The Cursed Manuscripts."

Iain Rob Wright is Cool
Revisado: 04-20-22
Ian Rob Wright is actually pretty cool- a possibly perfect balance - the swearing is perfectly realistic and "normal" like a down to earth protagonist. everything is mixed in seamlessly. Nothing seems ridiculous like it does with some authors. I'm gonna read more books by Wright.

Historia
On a damp October night, beautiful young Ashley Cordova is found dead in an abandoned warehouse in lower Manhattan. Though her death is ruled a suicide, veteran investigative journalist Scott McGrath suspects otherwise. As he probes the strange circumstances surrounding Ashley’s life and death, McGrath comes face-to-face with the legacy of her father: the legendary, reclusive, cult-horror-film director Stanislas Cordova - a man who hasn’t been seen in public for more than 30 years.

Interesting and Entertaining
Revisado: 01-14-22
It was easy to finish because there were never any long, slow, boring parts. Most books have some tedious parts that are slow and dull- but this book m. oved along quick for the duration. It was good.

Historia
In a sleepy, coastal, New England town, three men decide to rob and if need be torture a very old sea captain to learn where he keeps his wealth - a man who is so old no one ever remembers him being young; a man who pays for his purchases not with dollars, but with ancient gold and silver coins minted over two centuries ago; a man who speaks to spirits in bottles; a man who may not be a man at all.

Nearly Impossible to Hear the Actual Story
Revisado: 04-02-21
OMG! There’s so much added noise and garbled “effects”. If you can read this on kindle instead of listening, (and repeatedly having to rewind and try listening with just one ear, and then the other trying to decipher what the narrator is mumbling about, then do not waste your time. Lovecraft is really neat at times, but whomever decided to include all of the bizarre sound effects and background noise, really effed this whole thing up. Don’t they have anyone- anyone at all - to provide some Quality Control. Anyone that hears this abstract must agree that it’s completely hosed from so much added sound effects. And when there’s nothing obvious- like creaking doors, and ghostly moans and groans, they simply put so much reverb and distortion into it that even after 4 or 5 times in a row, slowly, then faster, then with one ear covered, etcetera, you still can’t hear it clearly enough to be even partly sure of what was said. Kindle is the only solution for this.
I’m only leaving this review so that hopefully they’ll cut out all the added garbage and sound effects botching it all up.

Must Read This Review!!!
Revisado: 08-15-20
Reading this book was like hearing all of these ideas- provocative and gritty-sounding and controversial. So my curiosity was piqued from just the “Book Details”.
As I read, I noticed a pattern, a constant hinting about a bit of film (like 8mm), that captured something so atrocious, so immoral and disturbing as to be indistinguishable from legend. Like the Loch Ness Monster or something. Did such a loop of film actually exist somewhere ? So lurid and depraved that it would forever taint the Japanese simply for having their soldiers in Nanking in 1937?
I was definitely curious. And then there was the current dealings with the Yakuza. And ultra high-level criminals - and their creepy entourage of body-guards, and in one case, a great, tall, skinny, mysterious tranny or hermaphrodite Nurse - the only one capable of the creepy things needed to keep an old sadistic soldier alive this long.
All of these elements.
And then the book is over.
It’s like a great big 12 hour long advertisement for a really cool and creepy book.
As if this was just a twelve hour outline, or 12 hrs worth of notes- waiting to be green-lit for an author to write books about. Several cool books- several different, separate books.
But the creativity stopped there. You can basically get the same satisfaction you’d get for reading 12 hoirs, if you just read THIE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH as an addendum to the information on the back cover:
Like an Egyptian scarab beetle believed to have powers of eternal life, the Ancient, Japanese soldier was keeping his own special war trophy: one of the many Chinese neo nates that - with his bayonet- he’d liberated from a screaming mother, and then cannibalized as she watched. Yes:
While mom died horribly of exsanguination- and helplessness and grief, the last thing she’d see would be the Japanese soldier eating parts of her live baby.
The Kicker: It worked!
The real Kicker: It was a placebo!
Merely The Act of eating a live baby in front of a shocked and terrified young mom gave him such satisfaction that all of his illnesses went away.
