Historia
In the snowbound city of Kiev, wry and bookish history student Mila Pavlichenko organizes her life around her library job and her young son—but Hitler’s invasion of Russia sends her on a different path. Given a rifle and sent to join the fight, Mila must forge herself from studious girl to deadly sniper—a lethal hunter of Nazis known as Lady Death. When news of her three hundredth kill makes her a national heroine, Mila finds herself torn from the bloody battlefields of the eastern front and sent to America on a goodwill tour.

Engaging historical novel
Revisado: 12-31-22
The author’s summary at the end draws the parallels between the memoir that the novel—and there are many. The lead character is so remarkable that it’s almost too much—except it’s true. Told with Quinn’s easy and engaging narrative, this one gets a bit long winded in the back 25%. But still a great story, exceptionally well narrated, and fast read.

Historia
During a hot summer of June moods, grubworms, and dark storms, Sunshine discovers stones in her chest—and learns the dangers her coming of age will bring about in the yellow house she shares with her father. Without the vocabulary to comprehend Billy's actions or her own changing body, Sunshine turns to an apocryphal story passed down from her grandmother: In the dark waters of the Black Bayou lives a crocodile with an insatiable appetite and a woman with a mysterious healing gift.

Powerful, winding tale of family secrets and strength
Revisado: 12-24-22
Pedersen has woven a history of three generations with a metaphorical tale that comes together like fingers in a clasped hand. Told through the eyes of a girl named Sunshine, we walk the treacherous bayous and backwoods of the south. Pedersen’s voice is authentic and true, bringing each character to life as the story slowly unfolds. Lovely and horrible. Truthful and imaginative. A great first novel.
