Have you ever wondered what it would be like to find yourself strapped to a giant rocket that's about to go from zero to 17,500 miles per hour? Or to look back on Earth from outer space and see the surprisingly precise line between day and night? Or to stand in front of the Hubble Space Telescope, wondering if the emergency repair you're about to make will inadvertently ruin humankind's chance to unlock the universe's secrets? Mike Massimino has been there, and in Spaceman he puts you inside the suit.

I expected to much
Revisado: 11-04-23
I ended up returning it. And I don't do that often. I'm not a learning leader podcast listener, but I did listen to "welcome to management". I found that book helpful, but this book felt very disjointed. It was literally like he wrote it 100 words at a time (as he said) and didn't have a real vision for a singular through line. Basically this book is "tiny notes from interviews". That would have been a better title. I hate to say it, but I'm also not a fan of his narration, it's like listening to a radio DJ. This book would be better if he had longer stories that built to something more profound. I just didn't see it going anywhere. Didn't want to waste even more time.

Historia
In Your Brain Is a Time Machine, brain researcher and best-selling author Dean Buonomano draws on evolutionary biology, physics, and philosophy to present his influential theory of how we tell and perceive time. The human brain, he argues, is a complex system that not only tells time but creates it; it constructs our sense of chronological flow and enables "mental time travel" - simulations of future and past events.

How to build a creative culture
Revisado: 07-25-23
Ed Catmull has done an amazing job weaving together his autobiography and a master class on creating and maintaining a collaborative creative culture. He narrates it himself and it takes a little getting used to his voice, but the narration is probably better because of its authenticity and Eds ownership and authority over the content.

Historia
Tell a stranger that you talk to yourself, and you’re likely to get written off as eccentric. But the truth is that we all have a voice in our head. When we talk to ourselves, we often hope to tap into our inner coach but find our inner critic instead. When we’re facing a tough task, our inner coach can buoy us up: Focus - you can do this. But, just as often, our inner critic sinks us entirely: I’m going to fail. They’ll all laugh at me. What’s the use?

Basically a long textbook
Revisado: 01-12-23
I was glad when this was over. While the depth of knowledge is impressive, this was one of the most boring books I've listened to. The narrator was impressive in his ability to pronounce so many words including other languages, but the lack of story really made this book feel like a dry highschool textbook. I took away some good information, but it just plain lacked story. Good for history majors, bad for the rest of us.

Historia
Innovation is the main event of the modern age, the reason we experience both dramatic improvements in our living standards and unsettling changes in our society. Forget short-term symptoms like Donald Trump and Brexit, it is innovation itself that explains them and that will itself shape the 21st century for good and ill. Yet innovation remains a mysterious process, poorly understood by policy makers and businessmen, hard to summon into existence to order, yet inevitable and inexorable when it does happen.

Tapestry of innovation stories and opinions
Revisado: 10-31-22
This is a group of largely new innovation stories, not a tired retelling of the same old stories we have read before. The author goes on to make the point that IP law and regulation are deterrents to innovation, which is helpful insight. Keep in mind this isn't a work of a historian, there's a fair amount of opinion here and probably some minor inaccuracies, but still valuable to read.

Historia
In the past few years, a number of well-known firms have failed; think of Blockbuster, Kodak, or RadioShack. When we hear about their demise, it often seems inevitable - a natural part of "creative destruction." But closer examination reveals a disturbing truth: Companies large and small are shuttering more quickly than ever. What does it take to buck this trend? The simple answer is: ambidexterity. Firms must remain competitive in their core markets, while also winning in new domains.

I read a lot of audiobooks, and even on my second try, I couldn't get into this book. I could not finish it. This book was meant for CEOs of big corporations, period. Good luck to anyone else to find any slivers of insight or interest.
