A bit long and occasionally prone to idiosyncratic interpretations of the Dhamma, I recommend this presentation of the principles and practices of these teachings.

The Buddha taught in language and in metaphor suited to the particular audience, with the intention of clarifying the path to liberation from suffering. These verses reflect patterns of over conceptualization, rather than simply supporting direct practice.

These practices are life affirming and inspiring. The one suggestion is for a final chapter which summarizes the teachings.

I think that Dr Hanson does a great job of relating meditation practices to neurophysiology, as a basic science. However, extending relatively brief exercises to include suggesting that someone “soften the edges between the conceptual and non conceptual” as a portion of an exercise risks putting an idea in someone’s head, which is distant from their actual capabilities. In other words, that and related exercises are advanced practices.

Ajahn Cha speaks so directly to the import and nature of Right Practice that at times it can seem utterly overwhelming. Ultimately however these talks are a huge gift.

I liked that there is a kernel of truth here, and dislike the multiple misrepresentations and overly broad interpretations.

The author parades a seemingly endless series of lab findings which overall is remarkably unhelpful. These supposedly scientific studies lack a competent theory.

He is a strong wordsmith. However he could have said twice as much by editing out 30-35% of what he wrote. After he misstated The Eightfold Noble Path as “the fourfold path of Buddhism “, and that Buddha said that “all is suffering “ (Buddha said that there is suffering, and it is to be understood.) he lost the majority of his credibility.
