A good listen, but not quite like I hoped
Revisado: 12-05-22
I came in expecting an exciting tale of espionage with all sorts of crazy tactics involved in such an infiltration. There were some satisfying moments from that perspective, but it was hardly the focus. It was instead focused on the history of the KKK and its influence in American politics, and the moments that Stallworth found his biggest leads on this concerning truth. A worthwhile listen for those interested in the realities of American history.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Interesting, but depressing
Revisado: 12-04-22
You can almost judge from the title the sort of tone this book will have, and indeed it’s very much a long story with several lows and no real highs. Jennette’s delivery is often bland and even-toned despite the importance of the material to her, but she does become emotional at times, and her impressions of others in her life are great. Overall, it’s a decent listen.

Historia
Set in the wake of the Mau Mau rebellion and on the cusp of Kenya's independence from Britain, A Grain of Wheat follows a group of villagers whose lives have been transformed by the 1952-1960 Emergency. At the center of it all is the reticent Mugo, the village's chosen hero and a man haunted by a terrible secret. As we learn of the villagers' tangled histories in a narrative interwoven with myth and peppered with allusions to real-life leaders, including Jomo Kenyatta, a masterly story unfolds in which compromises are forced, friendships are betrayed, and loves are tested.

Slow start

For me, The story seemed to meander for several before a coherent story appeared, but it was a thought-provoking story with well-written characters.

skills that aren't personality dependent
Revisado: 04-05-19
As a guy, I found that a lot of books and videos on dating success are made by and for dudes with extremely aggressive personalities, who don't even realize that they attract the same sorts of women. While not for the faint of heart, those who can understand that success with people is inherently amoral (immoral, in my opinion) will find great advice for developing both sexual and platonic relationships.

Historia
The founder of Ethiopia (or Abyssinia) and the founder of the Imperial dynasty are held to be Menelik I, son of Solomon, King of Israel, and of Makeda, the Queen of Sheba. According to legend, the brother Kings Ella Abrecha and Ella Asbeha, together with their mother, were converted to Christianity by the Coptic monk Frumentius of Alexandria in 330 AD. Their successor, King Kaleb, considerably expanded the kingdom to include parts of South Arabia.

Perhaps a better title could've been chosen
Revisado: 09-30-18
There's definitely useful info on the country's history here, but it veers off-topic for multiple chapters to talk about Rastafari and Ethiopian-Israeli nations. That's all compiled and presented well, but this just wasn't super relevant to what the title suggested.

Great content, bland delivery
Revisado: 08-01-18
Very helpful book if you want to communicate and persuade effectively. The narrator has a golden voice, but just speaks in a monotonous manner that gets distracting. There are some obvious misreadings that could've gotten a second or third pass before publishing. If you can get past the lackluster narration, though, it's well worth your time.
