Anchored to the prime suspect

This audiobook starts with a great idea--to get to the bottom of a previously unsolved murder in rural Ireland. Its authors say they will emphasize the facts only--not the gossip surrounding the case--but ultimately they become hijacked by the narcissistic "prime suspect," who may, or may not have committed the crime. We learn a bit about the unreliability of witnesses, about the potential misdeeds of the police, and about legal procedures in Ireland and France--but the book spends far too much time on the "p.s." and his flawed character, and not enough energy independently solving the crime. Had the authors identified the killer, or come to some new conclusion about this 20 year old case, it would have been more satisfying.

Medieval porn, pretty tame today

Horny priests, lusty maidens, foolish and wise cuckolds. Mildly titillating. Always goofy, and meant to display one moral principle or another. Overall: a change of pace and worth your time. You can’t listen to murder mysteries and serial killers all the time

Feeling the Heat

This is a passionate one-of-a-kind memoir of a summer spent mostly alone in Arches, Utah before the National Park was paved, easy to access, and tame. The author's powerful feelings for living (or dying) in nature in withering heat with little human company, make for a startling and extraordinary audiobook. His immersion in the remorseless desert, his Western outlook, and his disdain for "industrial tourism," are plain, but it is his love of the wilderness that dominates. If you have spent an hour dazzled by a meteor shower, a weekend on a mountaintop, or a season far from civilization, you will be amazed, amused, and hypnotized by this wonderful book.

Instead of having fun and seeing 'Hamilton,' this

The Founders of the Republic apparently wanted to start a nation built like Classical Rome or Athens. But they debated: how much power to grant to the farming classes? The individual States? The Federal Government? Hamilton wanted a strong central Government to make certain Americans paid our debts and could mount a strong national defense. James Madison, also a Federalist, felt that people their Institutions, and even branches of government needed to have their worst impulses checked and balanced. Their ideas produced the American Constitution and 200+ years of passionate debate about Freedom, Liberty, Security, National Identity, and Politics.

Clever and brilliant

For fans of McEwan and that Elizabethan dramatist, the name escapes me, anyway ..., he also wrote The Tempest...this short book binds in a tiny space our concerns, embodies our neuroses, our morbid inaction, our sense of a world on which we depend, but which we find murderously undependable. Polished. Thought-provoking. Often brilliant

Spoken Spanish for Business Travelers

I wanted to brush up on my Spanish language skills, and this set of 30 minute lessons suits my drive time well. The emphasis is on family life and business travel, which will probably suit most people who want a course in speaking Spanish. Phrases like: the hotel has room service; the business center is on the first floor. It has a photocopier and computer. It's next to the escalator. Juana works in accounting...abound. All that added to my vocabulary, although I'd like to learn more slang, more casual/street Spanish. The best feature, though, is the opportunity to hear and repeat clearly enunciated Spanish phrasing. My accent has really improved working with these lessons, and I intend to complete Level 5.
