Historia
Known for providing incisive progressive political analysis without being dogmatic, popular radio and podcast host David Pakman delves into the vicious cycle of reactionary political ideology. It's no secret how the right-wing has benefited and capitalized off disinformation and polarization of US politics. Critical thinking and media literacy are on a rapid decline, and our republic is unable to agree upon a shared set of facts. Pakman challenges the right-wing head-on and encourages listeners to understand how the status quo became the status quo.

Very intelligent analysis and break down of key issues people need to know
Revisado: 05-03-25
Pakman has YouTube channel with 3 million subscribers. Disclaimer, I have been a guest on this show twice. However, this book is excellent. My only gripe is the use of terms like “post truth” and “alternative facts” even though he does refute these. I believe we should just call them lies or disinformation. But this is a very important book that helps clarify a complex set of political realities.

Today’s technology has overtaken religion as the chief influence on twenty-first century life and community. In Tech Agnostic, Harvard and MIT’s influential humanist chaplain Greg Epstein explores what it means to be a critical thinker with respect to this new faith. Encouraging listeners to reassert their common humanity beyond the seductive sheen of “tech,” this book argues for tech agnosticism—not worship—as a way of life.

Essential Reading for everyone with a Smartphone
Revisado: 11-01-24
Actually for everyone who lives and has access to a computer and the internet. This is a very important book which calls on all of us to be human and not blindly follow the powerful tech billionaires and mindlessly believe. Epstein’s book can be compared with Luthor’s Theses and the huge reformation that took place from the Catholic Church orthodoxies. I predict this book will win many well deserved awards!

This book was so good. I just purchased the paperback. I teach, “It’s your mind and only you should control it” and Jim gives a lot of advice I also give to my clients and the general public. But it is much more systematic and chunked for success!

Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

Historia
We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

Great book. I dare say Wonderful
Revisado: 11-01-23
This book and developing a “wonder practice” is a truly life affirming exercise. It is well written and read. I was familiar with much of the research but really like the framing. My only dislike is the frequent reference to TM as a mediation practice. I have counseled too many people harmed by Maharishi’s cult. I have done interviews with former teachers and experts. I like meditation just avoid Transcendental Meditation.

Excellent history of the extremism we now see
Revisado: 09-29-23
I highly recommend this highly researched book. Corn provides example after example that documents the extremism we now are seeing in the Cult of Trump has been there since Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich. His research enriches the research I have been doing in my professional work as an expert in social psychology and undue influence. I particularly appreciated having specific regarding the John Birch Society and the Koch conglomerate's systematic influence to undermine government regulations and function.
The title is something I have heard from forensic psychiatrist Bandy X. Lee say to describe the mass psychosis of Trump cult followers. I view it more as undue influence (brainwashing, mind control, thought reform) from the research of the 1950s on Chinese Communist programs- supercharged by digital media and no data privacy protections and AI being used at scale.
I strongly recommend this fine book.

Historia
In 1956, the New York Times prophesied that once global warming really kicked in, we could see parrots in the Antarctic. In 2010, when science deniers had control of the climate story, Senator James Inhofe and his family built an igloo on the Washington Mall and plunked a sign on top: AL GORE'S NEW HOME: HONK IF YOU LOVE CLIMATE CHANGE. In The Parrot and the Igloo, bestselling author David Lipsky tells the astonishing story of how we moved from one extreme (the correct one) to the other.

Incredibly Well Researched and well written
Revisado: 09-07-23
As an expert in undue influence, this book connected a lot of dots for me at the deliberate disinformation campaigns waged using co-opted scientists as well as corrupt politicians and media spokespeople. I have been well acquainted with Frank Luntz who, in my opinion, bears a huge responsibility for the climate disasters we are experiencing daily globally. Shame on him! Shame on Singer! Shame on the Moonies who were hugely influential for many decades promoting science denial about human climate change. We must do better. Watch Al Gore’s recent TED talk. How can the US government give subsidies to the oil industry? How can we allow chaos agents destroy faith in science? And experts? We need to end corruption by a recent wring of values- starting with planetary survival!

Historia
Depending on which doctor you speak with or which websites you read, cannabis could be an appealing, low-risk medicine—even an aid to wellness—or an insidiously addictive drug rotting the brains of our youth. This dissonance confuses young people, distressed patients, and paralyzes politicians, all while inviting dubious sources of information and resulting in uninformed choices, enhanced polarization, and a fragmented national policy.

Thoroughly Researched and Comprehensive Book on Cannabis
Revisado: 08-17-23
I learned so much by reading this book. I hope Dr.Grinspoon organizes trainings for all in the medical world. Nixon is to blame for decades lost in researching the therapeutic benefits of medical marijuana. I learned about his father, Harvard psychiatrist Lester Grinspoon who wrote the 1971 groundbreaking book, Marijuana Reconsidered. Dr X in that book was Carl Sagan. I recommend this book heartily!
