Historia
A successful film professor and podcaster, Bodie Kane is content to forget her past—the family tragedy that marred her adolescence, her four largely miserable years at a New Hampshire boarding school, and the murder of her former roommate, Thalia Keith, in the spring of their senior year. Though the circumstances surrounding Thalia’s death and the conviction of the school’s athletic trainer, Omar Evans, are hotly debated online, Bodie prefers—needs—to let sleeping dogs lie.

Not so psychological. More about law and procedure and the influence of crowd sleuthing. It is solid, but not for me.

Historia
Winner of the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize and the Hans Fallada Prize, The End of Days, by the acclaimed German writer Jenny Erpenbeck, consists essentially of five "books", each leading to a different death of the same unnamed female protagonist. The first chapter begins with the death of a baby in the early 20th-century Hapsburg Empire. In the next chapter, the same girl grows up in Vienna after World War I, but a pact she makes with a young man leads to a second death. In the next scenario, she survives adolescence and moves to Russia with her husband.

Sound and fury signifying nothing
Revisado: 10-06-23
This book was a nihilistic downer for me. Life just a bunch of churn and suffering amounting to nothing. I must be in the minority though on this per the stats.

Man material
Revisado: 09-17-19
I’m sure this appeals to someone, but that someone’s just not me. On the other hand I did finish it, so it wasn’t that bad, but i give that to the narrator. If you think a super long episode of Rick and Morty that takes itself super seriously sounds great to you, then this is for you. The motivations of women are nowhere to be found in this book. They are merely fantasy tools for the nurturing, consoling, and self actualization of men. If that’s your thing, you will be pleased.

Historia
When a small vial arrives in her mailbox from "Lewis Carroll", Ayelet Waldman is at a low point. Her mood storms have become intolerably severe; she has tried nearly every medication possible; her husband and children are suffering with her. So she opens the vial, places two drops on her tongue, and joins the ranks of an underground but increasingly vocal group of scientists and civilians successfully using therapeutic microdoses of LSD.

Great
Revisado: 01-09-19
Too bad this book makes any basically law abiding person want to experiment with drugs more than they did before. But probably that’s what we were going for. Well written, researched and performed.

Historia
In The Power, the world is a recognizable place: There's a rich Nigerian boy who lounges around the family pool; a foster kid whose religious parents hide their true nature; an ambitious American politician; a tough London girl from a tricky family. But then a vital new force takes root and flourishes, causing their lives to converge with devastating effect. Teenage girls now have immense physical power: They can cause agonizing pain and even death. And, with this small twist of nature, the world drastically resets.

Interesting and too binary
Revisado: 04-24-18
I feel like this book didn’t take into account social justice movements, the history of human rights advocacy, and more subtle but nonetheless very basic gender awareness such as non-binary identity. Also, a lot of historians argue that the world is getting less violent over time in general, and I feel this overall awareness was lacking from the authors worldview. It was fun and thoughtful though.

Historia
Shrill is an uproarious memoir, a feminist rallying cry in a world that thinks gender politics are tedious and that women, especially feminists, can't be funny. Coming of age in a culture that demands women be as small, quiet, and compliant as possible - like a porcelain dove that will also have sex with you - writer and humorist Lindy West quickly discovered that she was anything but. With inimitable good humor, vulnerability, and boundless charm, Lindy boldly shares how to survive in a world where not all stories are created equal.

Brilliant
Revisado: 06-24-16
Lindy West is so funny and amazing. Listening to the audio book in her own voice is a special treat. As a Seattleite I've followed her career since she worked at the Stranger and wrote hilarious film critique. She has gone on in this life to do so much more whether she was ready or not and it is awesome to follow along in this book each of the shifts she has made from fat activist to rape joke challenger to Internet troll reconciler, and finally woman in love. I hope she gets everything she wants in life and ends up being president or something. I think she's beautiful.
