I'm enjoying this story but the narration...
Revisado: 11-30-21
I'm rather enjoying listening to the story. The author develops his characters fairly well and it stays mostly tied to historical reality while spinning an entertaining yarn.
But the narration. The narrator has the inflections that indicate that he may be a native English speaker but he manages to mis-pronounce words in English, French, Russian, Japanese, and Tagalog. It's kind of an amazing performance and I find myself listening for the next one. It's as if he has limited experiences and has rarely come in contact with other people. He is certainly not familiar with some technical terms and specialized vernacular. I've pledged to take a drink of Cognac every time he says "Boats wayne" or "Gun-whale."I just will have to explain to my wife why I may be a bit wobbly.
This performance is doing me a favor though. It has made me aware of the absolute importance of finding a really knowledgeable narrator before my work goes into audio format.

Patterson-Clinton have hit their stride
Revisado: 06-18-21
This second offering by Bill Clinton and James Patterson is very engaging. James Patterson has the formula for thriller writing tattooed on his brain and Bill Clinton provides the inside knowledge of personalities and procedures that only he could know. I liked the first book but this one, I literally have to ration or I'll finish too quickly. I hope this is not the last by these two.

Pretty good, Bond gets it, narrator awful
Revisado: 09-18-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend the book but if you live in Hawaii, the narration will drive you nuts.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The surfing dachshund.
What didn’t you like about Roger Wayne’s performance?
The author apparently did not exert enough control over the choice of the narrator. If this story were set in Omaha, he would be fine but not for Oahu. ex: Punawho school, Kalewee Maui, and so on. He murders Hawaiian names. Toby Neal and Frankie Bow did it right by choosing excellent narrators with Hawaii roots. It's difficult to walk the line of being authentic but still accessible to a broad audience. This guy doesn't do it.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. It's good for the car or poolside.
Any additional comments?
Writing a mystery set in Hawaii is difficult. My favorite recent failure was the author who created a private resort island off the coast of Oahu. Authors like Bow and Neal get it right by virtue of being part of local culture. It sticks out like a sore thumb when authors don't know what they're talking about.

Eh brah, dis one good book!
Revisado: 06-19-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Frankie Bow knows the Big Island and local academic politics. So often, people write about Hawaii without ever having been here. This audio book is refreshing, entertaining, and gets things right.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Numerous plot twists keep the action going right up to the dénoument.
Which character – as performed by Nicole Gose – was your favorite?
All of the characters were spot on. One of the strengths of Ms Gose is that she is from Hawaii and the characterizations are excellent.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Not extreme, just an enjoyable read.
Any additional comments?
Both Frankie Bow and Nicole Gose know how to walk that very fine line that provides an experience that remains true to local culture but still is comprehensible to readers who don't live here. (It's actually quite a trick to accomplish this.)

Historia
Our rakish hero, Alan Lewrie, is in trouble with his wife, condemned by his daughter, and out of favor with the Admiralty. He is lucky enough to receive a command position on an expedition to the West Indies, there to suppress a bloodthirsty slave rebellion led by Toussaint L'Ouverture, the future father of Haitian independence. In Haiti, L'Ouverture's forces are sacking plantations and slaughtering whites and mulattoes.

Another fine author for the RN junkie
Revisado: 12-28-04
Dewey Lambdin helps to fill the void left by the passing of Patrick O'Brien. His adventures (and misadventures) of Alan Lewrie, RN ring a familiar note for the die hard devotee of the Royal Navy and the exploits of its officers and men during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic period. I think what makes reading these stories particularly enjoyable is the knowledge that no matter how audacious the actions of the heroes, they are usually based on events that actually happened and were recorded in logs and diaries by the officers who participated in them.
