The action in this one is a bit slow to start but once it does it just keeps going until the fiend stands atop a mountain of flame.

Looking forward to seeing Atar get some more character development, along with the other companions besides Vess who haven’t had as much screen time.

Back to Bob

I’m glad the author returned to its origins of Bob exploration and not as much of the politics of the last couple of books.

It was also good to explore the origins of the Skippies and Star Fleet.

With the series getting a much needed new direction I’m excited to see where the Bobs go from here.

Matt and Astor begin the climb

After listening to 11 books of the He Who Fights With Monsters and a very emo Jason it’s refreshing to hear a much more rational and pragmatic protagonist, Matt, and his Arctic Fox Astor.

To be fair Matt doesn’t get dropped into a cage filled with cannibals and having to slaughter real people to escape but having monsters eat his parents is traumatic in its own right. I’m glad the author started later after leaving the orphanage so we can see that determination to be become stronger to protect that which they love.

The setting and powers have a unique structure to see them so I’m excited to see them get developed.

Overall I give it 5 stars and can’t wait to read book 4.

Straight to the Action

Another great book in the series. This time focused on the Red Knight and the power of friendship. Hopefully, we can see Omega get more fleshed out the next book.

Filler Book

The start was good but the rest of the book was filler. It wasn’t bad filler but it was filler nonetheless. Hope the pace picks up next book.

The Matrix meets The Truman Show

This book is very Meta. They should have abstained from letting us see the “Real” world outside The Matrix “which is Earth 21st century”. The Real world makes little sense in how the entire society revolves around either playing or watching “The Game” without them being post scarcity which they are very far from. With extreme time dilation (one week is 10 years) I don’t know how anyone but the rich, which can follow their players with time compression enabled, can stay on top of someone especially when ‘Recording is not allowed’, that’s just silly.

They breezed passed the real purpose of The Game, to my eyes, being to steal their ideas and let a simulation handle the testing and development.

The Narrator remains top notch as always. Interesting to see where the next book goes but they need to increase the stakes, cut the Real World out and add in some humor.

A return to (mostly) solo play

This book cut out the out of game world and even the guild management to focus on the adventure. It worked for this book and setup the next story but I found myself missing some aspects of them.

Pacing was consistent throughout though some more levity would have been enjoyed. Add more Constantine moments. The run away spell sigils were a key highlight.

Overall the narrator and story delivered. Excited to see where the story heads.

More secrets revealed

The Arcanist did a great job in collecting obscure lore. The final summary at the end of this research was excellent. It really gave a lot of depth to the Alons actions. Excited to see where the expedition goes.

Good book wrong title

Overall the book was good but the big bad this one only performed marginally better than the Censorate. The spell monger needs more competent foes.

Also the title is misleading there was very little Thaumaturgy it should have been Count Palatine.

Still I’m excited to see where the story goes.

Seeds for the future of SCI-Fi

Many ideas for future tech, signal absorbing paint (stealth tech), negative matter (antimatter), planet destroyers, non ferrous ships (stealth tech) and more.

The story meanderers a bit but Kim gets it done in the end.
