Historia
Look beyond the abstract dates and figures, kings and queens, and battles and wars that make up so many historical accounts. Over the course of 48 richly detailed lectures, Professor Garland covers the breadth and depth of human history from the perspective of the so-called ordinary people, from its earliest beginnings through the Middle Ages.

oh, the humanity!
Revisado: 12-31-19
Professor Garland delivers delicious (and sometimes disgusting) slices of ancient and early modern life with zest, humor, and compassion, focusing on common people like ourselves but providing sufficient information about historical benchmarks to put "we, the people" into perspective. Unlike many other authors and lecturers, Dr. Garland is warm and funny as he invites each of us to put ourselves into our forebears' sandals. Highly recommended!

Historia
Author Peter Ackroyd has won the Somerset Maugham Award, the Whitbread Novel of the Year, and the Guardian Fiction Prize, and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Based on Geoffrey Chaucer’s immortal work, this retelling of The Canterbury Tales follows a party of travelers as they tell stories amongst themselves about love and chivalry, saints and legends, travel and adventure. Through allegory, satire, and humor, the tales help pass the time during their journey.

An engaging retelling
Revisado: 11-23-19
I'd searched in vain for a Middle English recitation of the Canterbury Tales. But, on the strength of Peter Ackroyd's wonderful books, I chanced his "retelling" of Chaucer's great work. This is a lively Modern English version of all the prologues and tales, told in the tongues of the various Canterbury pilgrims and their host, with sensitivity, great good humor, and differentiation of character and diction. A real gem, and a wonderful resource for anyone not quite up to reading the Middle English original. But, still, I'd love to hear the Tales in Geoffrey Chaucer's own words.

Historia
In Foundation the chronicler of London and of its river, the Thames, takes us from the primeval forests of England's prehistory to the death of the first Tudor king, Henry VII, in 1509. He guides us from the building of Stonehenge to the founding of the two great glories of medieval England: common law and the cathedrals. He shows us glimpses of the country's most distant past - a Neolithic stirrup found in a grave, a Roman fort, a Saxon tomb, a medieval manor house.

Fascinating history, told well
Revisado: 03-18-19
Many other reviewers have "chafed" over the presentation by narrator Clive Chafer, saying that he speaks in a monotone. I disagree! It is always clear, for example, when he is about to read a direct quotation. And I find that his vocal intonation conveys irony and other forms of extra-textual expression quite well. All in all, this is a wonderful book - I enjoyed it so thoroughly, in fact, that I've just purchased "The Tudors" (again, with Chafer narrating) as well as the Kindle "print" edition of "Foundation."
