Historia
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

I wish Gerard Doyle read all of this author’s books. Loved the backstory/earlier story for the Slow Horses series. Left me wanting more. Guess I’ll have to start back on Slow Horses again.

Very interesting story
Revisado: 03-28-25
I did not like the reader. More suited to a romantic story rather than this kind of book. She has a pleasant lilting voice but it ruins the story for me. I had to turn it off frequently to get a rest. Much prefer the Slow horses reader.

Historia
Renée Ballard and the LAPD’s Open-Unsolved Unit get a hot shot DNA connection between a recently arrested man and a serial rapist and murderer who went quiet twenty years ago. The arrested man is only twenty-four, so the genetic link must be familial: His father was the Pillowcase Rapist, responsible for a five-year reign of terror in the city of angels. But when Ballard and her team move in on their suspect, they encounter a baffling web of secrets and legal hurdles. Meanwhile, Ballard’s badge, gun, and ID are stolen.

Revisado: 10-28-24
Didn’t like the gruesome descriptions of the victims. This is the first book EVER of Michael Connely, and I have all of them) that I found disappointing. I don’t think Bosch would have been ok with the badge scheme. Hope the next one is the old Bosch again.

I was really disappointed by this story. I had such great expectations and I feel let down. It was contrived and unconvincing.

I purchased the Kindle version because I couldn’t bear the reader. Like being in Kindergarten and being read to by a teacher. Some of the info is helpful but I can’t continue listening. No refund either since I purchased it.

There’s chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

Disappointed for the first time
Revisado: 11-22-21
Story was interesting at first, but in the third part it became boring. The reader has a pleasant voice which makes me tune out. Too little Bosch and way too much Ballard. I rally didn’t like Ballard's cavalier attitude about the shootings.

Back when Harry Bosch was just a rookie homicide detective, he had an inspiring mentor who taught him to take the work personally and light the fire of relentlessness for every case. Now that mentor, John Jack Thompson, is dead, but after his funeral his widow hands Bosch a murder book that Thompson took with him when he left the LAPD 20 years before - the unsolved killing of a troubled young man in an alley used for drug deals.

First time I was disappointed
Revisado: 10-30-19
I’m embarrassed to say, I didn’t enjoy this one. Embarrassed because I’m a huge Connelly/Bosch/Welliver fan. I just found the story boring for the first time. Most loved the book and I’m in the minority. I was rehearing Black Ice (starting the series over for the fourth time) when Night Fire came out. I still better than most other thrillers but I guess I expected more. But I will keep reading anything coming out from this author.

In this Audible Original “mini-memoir”, the Academy Award-winning star of Little Miss Sunshine and Argo looks back on his life as a series of philosophical turning points, learning experiences, and a-ha moments. Drawn from a collection of seemingly inexplicable stories and encounters from Arkin's 84 years on this planet, Out of My Mind is a candid, relatable and delightfully irreverent take on how one man went searching for meaning and ended up discovering himself.

Historia
Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

Revisado: 10-26-18
This was the first Michael Connelly book I didn’t want to listen to. I tried but gave up after a while. This one Ill have to read in print. I’m so glad, Audible decided to engage another reader. I didn’t really care for Len Cariou because he seems to spit out his words even when there is no drama. But he is 10 times better.

Gory details and sound effects and way too long
Revisado: 10-24-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Maybe somebody who doesn't flinch every time a sound effect goes off in their ear (especially when wearing headphones as I do)
Would you ever listen to anything by David Baldacci again?
Yes! Because I enjoyed Absolute Power very much. I had seen the movie long ago and wanted to read the book. I'll just pay attention to the reviews next time before I get one.
What three words best describe Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy ’s voice?
Ron McLarty was fine but the female voice wasn't necessary.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment, boredom and inability to finish the book.
Any additional comments?
So sad, I was really looking forward to listening to this book but I guess every author has to have a clinker now and then.
