Historia
All twenty-year-old Daisy Haites has ever wanted is a normal life, but as the heiress to London’s most notorious criminal empire, it’s just not in the cards for her. Raised by her older brother, Julian, after their parents were murdered, Daisy has never been able to escape the watchful gaze of her gang-lord brother. But Julian’s line of work means that Daisy’s life is . . . complicated. And things don’t become any easier when she falls hard for the beautiful and emotionally unavailable Christian Hemmes, who happens to be one of the few men in London who doesn’t answer to Julian.

Couldn’t finish it
Revisado: 03-26-25
There was nothing remotely entertaining about this book for me as a reader. I fought my way through the first third of the book before deciding I’d had enough. Storyline was awful about a group of extremely rich young “adults” who are so amoral as to be disgusting. The reader has an English accent and sounds like she has a terrible cold & a wad of gum in her mouth. Maybe it’s a posh accent but she was difficult to understand. I would give 0 stars in every category if I had the option.

Historia
Sean was a seventh-grade drop-out, a dishwasher then a construction worker to help his mother and sister scrape by, and a self-described "nobody with a sad story behind him." Yet he cannot deny the glimmers of life's goodness even amid its rough edges. Such goodness becomes even harder to deny when Sean meets the love of his life at a fried chicken church potluck, and harder still when his lifelong love of storytelling leads him to stages across the southeast, where he is known and loved as "Sean of the South."

Most uplifting!
Revisado: 10-13-22
Listening to Sean Dietrich tell his own story was a lovely experience for me. What he has to say is powerful and encouraging. His narration style is perfect and enhances every anecdote and story he tells.
Young readers may not be able to appreciate what this book has to offer but most over the age of 40 will recognize themselves in some of the incidents related and welcome the good feelings elicited while listening to the author tell his tale. Highly recommend this audible book.

Historia
Jimmy Lee Hickam grew up along Red Dog Road, a dead-end strip of gravel and mud buried deep in the bowels of Appalachian Ohio. It is the poorest road, in the poorest county, in the poorest region of the state. To make things worse, the name Hickam is synonymous with trouble. Jimmy Lee hails from a heathen mix of thieves, moonshiners, drunkards, and general anti-socials that for decades have clung to both the hardscrabble hills and the iron bars of every jail cell in the region. This life, Jimmy Lee believes, is his destiny, someday working with his drunkard father at the sawmill, or sitting next to his arsonist brother in the penitentiary.

Enjoyed this story
Revisado: 06-02-22
This is a good story. My take away is that a person in the most awful conditions can find their way to a better place when they have someone who sees their potential & encourages them to grab the opportunity that comes their way. I know there are an untold number of times when a teacher sees the gift a particular student had been given & is willing to run alongside that student, encouraging, guiding, even loving the student enough to give them the courage & self confidence to take the leap & fly.
I hate the use of profanity in literature today. It does nothing to enhance this story & is a detractor from an otherwise thoughtful, well written, & well performed piece.

Historia
Scarred by the senseless death of their son and baffled by the engulfing chaos of the 1960s, Joe Allston and his wife, Ruth, have left the coast for a California retreat. And although their new home looks like Eden, it also has its serpents: Jim Peck, a messianic exponent of drugs, yoga, and sex, and Marian Catlin, an attractive young woman whose otherwordly innocence is far more appealing—and far more dangerous.

Powerful
Revisado: 05-20-22
I have just finished listening to this powerful story. The narrator is masterful in his performance. The tale is all the better for his telling of it. This is the best book of Stegner’s that I have come across so far. It is both uplifting & heartbreaking, ever moving toward it’s inevitable end.
I’m amazed at Stegner’s way of painting pictures with words. I’m moved by the depths of emotion he draws out of the reader as he depicts love, joy, fear, hatred, disappointment & the overwhelming grief. I will ponder this story for some time to come. It has been worth every minute I spent listening. And I will listen to it again sometime in the future to undoubtedly experience some of what I missed the first time through. An excellent experience.

Unnecessary use of offensive language
Revisado: 03-16-22
I would have really enjoyed the story but for the totally unnecessary use of the f-word in nearly every dialogue throughout the book. It ruined the effect of relationships that developed. It made the character of the various individuals less substantial. Why does the author find this particular expletive so compelling? It is a distraction from an otherwise interesting story. I will not recommend this author to anyone & I won’t read anything by this author again.

Historia
When Harland Cain holds a .45 automatic to his head and bears down slowly upon the trigger, he experiences a profound sense of control over his destiny for the first time in his life. He savors the moment and imagines the click of the hammer, the explosion, and the bullet spiraling through the barrel before everything turns black. It's then he hears the out-of-control screaming of tires on the pavement, followed by the sickening sound of metal crashing against concrete. He lays down the pistol and crosses his yard in that predawn darkness to find a young boy, bloody and dazed.

Very enjoyable
Revisado: 02-09-21
I enjoyed listening to this story. The reader does an excellent job which makes the story even better. I think I will listen to it again in a couple of weeks so that I have a better idea of the different timeframes of the story. May even need to write them down to help keep the many characters separated into the year(s) in which they appear. Overall, I found this audiobook most entertaining.
