Historia
Maybe it was the Shenanigans gift certificate that put her over the edge. When children's librarian and self-professed nice girl Jane Jameson is fired by her beastly boss and handed $25 in potato skins instead of a severance check, she goes on a bender that's sure to become Half Moon Hollow legend. On her way home, she's mistaken for a deer, shot, and left for dead.

The other reviews said it was laugh-out-loud funny. Yes, yes it is! ...And sarcastic, and even a little sexy. The story was light without being too predictable or cliche. The pace was great. I was chuckling in my car and even sat in the garage waiting for a spot to pause so I could go in the house because it was so good.
The narrator is the absolute best I have heard. Hands down.

Historia
Jacob Tomsky has worked in hotels for more than a decade, doing everything from valet parking to manning the front desk. He's checked you in, checked you out, separated your white panties from the white bed sheets, parked your car, tasted your room service, cleaned your toilet, denied you a late check out, given you a wake-up call, eaten M&Ms out of your mini-bar, laughed at your jokes, and taken your money. And in Heads in Beds, he pulls back the curtain on the hospitality business.

I very much enjoyed the humor and pace of this book. The little bit of fun after the credits was a treat. It's not life changing, and I didn't really learn anything new; just confirmed that hospitality staff are sneaky, cocky, and money-hungry. Ahhh...but that's OK with me!

Historia
"Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" So goes the signature introduction of New York Herald star journalist Henry Morton Stanley to renowned explorer Dr. David Livingstone, who had been missing for six years in the wilds of Africa. Into Africa ushers us into the meeting of these remarkable men. In 1866, when Livingstone journeyed into the heart of the African continent in search of the Nile's source, the land was rough, unknown to Europeans, and inhabited by man-eating tribes.

I felt like I was on an expedition to find the unknown END of this book!
It could've been truncated a lot by focusing on the matter at hand. I understand developing the characters background, but many of them could've been left out.
The whole first portion was about explorers other than Livingstone and Stanley all together!
Ugh!

Historia
Karen Abbott's colorful, nuanced portrait of the iconic Everleigh sisters; their world-famous brothel, the Everleigh Club; and the perennial clash between our nation's hedonistic impulses and Puritanical roots culminates in a dramatic last stand between brothel keepers and crusading reformers. Sin in the Second City offers a vivid snapshot of America's journey from Victorian-era propriety to 20th-century modernity.

Could have told more of a story

Many of the other reviewers were very harsh. I agree that this felt very unfocused. I understood that the story was told of the sisters chronologically, but I really though that there could have been a stronger theme presented. Perhaps, some artistic license as to describing the characters. Some of the ancillary characters were described in far too great of detail making things very confusing.
I mean come on! When you have to have a LIST OF CHARACTERS at the beginning just to keep track of everyone, that should be the first clue that something isn't done well.

Historia
In Long Island, a farmer found a duck pond turned red with blood. On the Lower East Side, two boys playing at a pier discovered a floating human torso wrapped tightly in oilcloth. Blueberry pickers near Harlem stumbled upon neatly severed limbs in an overgrown ditch. Clues to a horrifying crime were turning up all over New York, but the police were baffled: There were no witnesses, no motives, no suspects. The grisly finds that began on the afternoon of June 26, 1897, plunged detectives headlong into the era's most perplexing murder.

Even after listening, I'm not sure that the second thread-line of story about the tabloids was really that important. In the description, we (or at least I) are lead to believe that this story shaped the tabloids we know today. The connect, while presented to a be a true and valid one, isn't as strong as I had originally thought. The story focused more on the actual murder with the tabloids (it felt) as an aside. In addition, I really thought that the book dragged about 3/4 of the way through, and I was just grinding it out to get the the END! I think the author could've abbreviated some of the details to keep things moving. That being said, it's a very good book and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it in my car. I would recommend it; just don't expect a fast-paced murder mystery.

What better review can I give for this book than I've told as many of my young women college students that they need to listen to it. NOW. I wish I would have heard it before I went for my Doctorate and certainly before I took this position. Pay it forward ladies. This book is fantastic.
