I didn’t feel connected to the characters or the story but I admire Ben Lerner’s ability to evoke the Uber—cool world of Brooklyn and the artistes there in.

I hadn’t read Alice Munro’s work before and felt she was too important a writer to miss. I might have gotten lost in the threads following the characters who she follows from childhood to old age, but the writing is straight forward, entertaining and clearly from the perspective of a writer in the 40s and 50s. This is the time of my Southern parents so I found it engaging even though these people are in Canada and the Northwest.

The story of a pompous fabulously wealthy man and the woman who made him and herself wealthy with her superior skills she never took credit for, and the highly intelligent writer who apparently lost her big chance, was not inherently satisfying but Diaz’ artistry is impressive. I’m sure I’ve missed some meanings that might occur to me later.

Claudia Golden has laid out the facts and history that even a wave 3 feminist didn’t fully grasp. I enjoyed every minute.

The presentation of much data in a way that brings it alive is the strength of this work. By a woman who won a Nobel Prize for it.

Paul Simon is a musical genius but hearing him talk about the process of his craft is breathtaking at times. Not to be missed!

Ann Patchett created a set of essays, stories really, that were always gripping and make one want to listen on. Much raw feeling was metabolized in the writing about the situation we all shared of the pandemic and it was helpful to my own work on it.

The story of the Frankist era of Jewish history is so convoluted and complex that it isn’t taught in standard Jewish education programs. It was fascinating to learn about in such beautiful prose. Thanks and great respect to the author, the translator and the narrators.

The story of Jennifer Doudna and her colleagues/competitors in developing the gene editing technology that will change our world is gripping. Walter Isaacson is a master of interviewing subjects and presenting them in all their complexity.

Mark Solms is an extraordinarily intelligent man driven to understand the mind and brain from a perspective that is equally brain-based and emotionally-based (in the sense of emotion as driver of thought and behavior). This book is accessible to non-scientists but still a stretch in places. Worth the effort!

We learn about a deeply ambivalent relationship between spouses who have an unconventional marriage that is ended by a sudden death. What follows allows us into the inner lives of the survivors and the success of the novel depends on how well the reader identifies with each. Lovely writing as always and a bittersweet story where no one is unscathed by love and fantasies about love.
