This was one heck of a ride! Mind-bendy comic sci-fi filled with fascinating characters, settings, and details that makes sense one wonder whether the writing took place while enjoying — substances.
The narration is brilliant!

As a young man, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. He wrote three versions of his autobiography over the course of his lifetime and published his own newspaper. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence, he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.

Informative but drags on and on

While I learned a great deal about Douglass's life, much of which seems related as possibly out of Douglass's flawed memory or even embellishment, the prose is filled with, well, filler between virtually every moment or important point. This makes the experience drag on and on and on.
Normally, I listen during long commutes and hate having to leave my car and resume a book later -- I get THAT into it. But this book had me turning off the app half way into my drive, for the monotony of the reading.
Lots of great material, just way too filled with fluff for my taste. Your mileage may vary.

Carver's stories are brilliant, but the narration, I'm sad to say, put me to sleep. I had to goose speed to 1.25 x normal to make it tolerable. This one is better read in print or ebook.

The ebook and workbook weren't enough; I couldn't leave for work without grabbing the audio version, too. It's packed with so much great character-building information you'll need to slow down the read rate and take it all in. During a rough week at work, this selection made the commute more than worthwhile.
This is a must own for story writers.

Having read Priest's Clockwork Century series, I decided to hear Boneshaker read. I was not disappointed. This unique, vivid, steampunk yarn is unforgettable, and the narrator's tag-team to bring Priest's characters even more alive -- even the undead.
By far, the best narration I have yet experienced.
