Historia
A lost gold mine, a corpse in an abandoned pickup truck, and an eerie wailing heard on Halloween are among the delicious plot elements Tony Hillerman cooks up in his 15th novel featuring Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee. The two Navajo cops, one old and one young—who originally debuted in separate series but have been collaborating for many books now—are among the most engaging, fully human characters in crime fiction. As The Wailing Wind beautifully demonstrates, there's only one Tony Hillerman ... and he's at the top of his game.

George Guidall is the best narrator in the Hillerman series. I wish he narrated the Anne Hillerman books as well.

Dialogue and voices
Revisado: 07-20-24
I’m marveling at the choice of narrator and her genius at interpreting Anne Hillerman’s brilliant story, scenes, and characters. Not once was I jolted from the world Hillerman created by a word or pause or false note. The performance perfectly portrayed my own sense of each character. I hope Audible has more of her work.

Narration unsatisfactory
Revisado: 04-16-24
The listener should be unaware of the narration while hearing the story. This narrator reads the book to us with awkward pauses and inappropriate emphases, instead of telling the story. She sounds very amateur.

Historia
An unexpected death on a lonely road outside of Utah’s Bears Ears National Park raises questions for Navajo Tribal Police officers Jim Chee and Bernadette Manuelito. Why would a seasoned outdoorsman and well-known paleontologist freeze to death within walking distance of his car? A second death brings more turmoil. Who is the unidentified man killed during a home invasion where nothing seems to have been taken? Why was he murdered? An illicit business, a fossilized jaw bone, hints of witchcraft, and a mysterious disappearance during a blizzard add to the peril.

Narration distracts from story
Revisado: 02-24-24
It took me awhile to understand why I was not enjoying this Hillerman as much as usual. At first I thought it was because I had accidentally skipped the previous book, so I started it instead, but less than a chapter in, I realized that it was the narration that was distracting in both titles . The narrator has a nice voice, but she does not perform or even narrate - she reads it, at best. It’s as if instead of sentences, you hear the ends of the printed lines in the printed script. Her tone is monotonous and occasionally “sing-song.” Plus she occasionally mis-pronounces words, such as adding an additional syllable in “inimitable.” It’s very disappointing, enough so that I’m reading the printed books instead of listening. I hope this review helps. I’m a huge fan and longtime Audible subscriber. If I had read the reviews for DeLanna Studi’s previous narration, I would not have ordered this book.

Narrator has an amazing facility for giving voice to the characters. THis book is very tightly written -- it was originally a play -- and the narrator did not miss a beat.

Historia
The Queen of England has concocted a plan in which penniless aristocrat Lady Georgie is to entertain a Bavarian princess and conveniently place her in the playboy prince's path, in the hopes that he might finally marry.
But queens never take money into account. Georgie has very little, which is why she moonlights as a maid-in-disguise.

I enjoyed this immensely. I don't know if it was the writing or the narrating, but it provided many fun and lighthearted hours. I'm a mystery fan and wasn't sure this "little" series would stand up to those of my friends Sayers, Allingham, Wentworth, Collins, Marsh, Grimes ...well, you get it. But it did. This was the second in the series and a bit better than the first, but the first was good enough for me to get the second. I hereby admit Rhys Bowen into my circle.

Historia
Ngaio Marsh’s most popular novel begins when a young New Zealander’s first contact with the English gentry is the body of Lord Wutherford - with a meat skewer through the eye.... The Lampreys had plenty of charm - but no cash. They all knew they were peculiar - and rather gloried in it. The double and triple charades, for instance, with which they would entertain their guests - like rich but awful Uncle Gabriel, who was always such a bore.

Charmed, I'm Sure
Revisado: 08-29-16
This is perhaps Ngaio Marsh's most charming of her many charming books. How it has affected me is this: I don't believe I have ever written the word 'charming' before in my lifetime. I read this years ago in paperback, but hearing it spoken aloud has been another experience, another quite charming experience, I am tempted to say, but I will not. I'll just urge you to enjoy it for yourselves.
