Historia
As a columnist for the New York Times who writes often about spiritual topics for a skeptical audience, Ross Douthat understands that many of us—whether we are agnostic, somewhat religious, or longtime believers—want to have more faith than we do. But we think we can't believe the way our ancestors did, knowing what we know now—can we? With clear and straightforward arguments, Believe shows how religious belief makes sense of the order of the cosmos and our place within it, illuminates the mystery of consciousness, and explains the persistent reality of encounters with the supernatural.

Modern Apologetics
Revisado: 03-01-25
Had the "hitch" been still alive when this book came out he would have written a new book, "The Big Tradition Churches are Not Good" . Likewise with the trailing apologetics, not good. By the way, the deconstruction projects are still underway and still finding lots of human fingerprints all over the copies of the copies of an after the fact news break. Check in with Bart Ehrman and Elaine Pagels to catch up on the new forensic technologies that tell a different story that the author. The BIG Traditions have big histories of unchristian behaviors, not just now and then but persistently. Other tradition's, particularly Buddhism have rich scriptures for those who take the time to give them good attention. The Buddha like the Jesus had their movements hijacked by the imperial leaders of the time. All we need is the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 25 and the Dharma teachings to "work out our own salvation with fear and trembling". I do agree that even in the chaos of the big, culture driven traditions some may find their way. Working out your own salvation takemore work, more attention to detail and eventually finds personal experiences based on helping others rather than truck loads of doctrines, creeds, beads, candles, crosses, breads and wine. "Belief" was worth the read to recognize all organized movements have a long path yet to climb and sort out. They just need more time to meditate, study and serve others more often. These efforts are more rewarding than the big box religio/showbiz Jesus Rock or the Christian Nationalist who appear ready to draw swords and go on a crusaid. Work out your own Belief/Action Journey.

Historia
In this groundbreaking, inspiring book, Robin R. Meyers, the senior minister of Oklahoma City’s Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ, shows how listeners can move from a theology of obedience to one of consequence. He argues that we need to stop seeing our actions as a means for pleasing a distant God and rediscover how God has empowered us to care for ourselves and the world. Drawing on stories from his decades of active ministry, Meyers captures how the struggles of ordinary people hint at how we can approach faith as a radical act of trust in a God who is all around us.

Enlightenment in a book
Revisado: 07-13-24
As usual for this great preacher, writer and progressive soul, starts are not enough to reveal the priceless learning provided. I have read most of his books, along with every lecture and interview available on YouTube.. Although I am "unchurched" I understand the value of resistance to the empires and the need for being a full-time seeker. Thank you, Dr. Meyers,

Few new findings with new research resources
Revisado: 07-13-24
More hypothetical than proof driven, but interesting in some ways. The entire historical and researched stories of the first through the sixth centuries of the Jesus people, the evolution of the texts, the creeds and the Empire of the Church is a hot mess. After all the years of research and writing it appears that there is less and less to discuss. The "proof models" required in science are not available to this form of historical research and writings, which produce lots of opinions. However, opinions are often useful.

Historia
Millions of Americans know yoga as a superb form of exercise and as a potent source of calm in the midst of our stress-filled lives. Far fewer are aware of the full promise of yoga as "the way of the fully alive human being" - a 4,000-year-old practical path of liberation that fits the needs of modern Western seekers with startling precision. Now Stephen Cope, a Western-trained psychotherapist who has lived and taught for more than 10 years at the largest yoga center in America, offers this marvelously lively and irreverent "pilgrim's progress" for today's world.

Based on a careful analysis of the earliest Christian documents and recent archaeological discoveries, The Jesus Dynasty offers a bold new interpretation of the life of Jesus and the origins of Christianity. The story is surprising, controversial, and exciting as only a long-lost history can be when it is at last recovered.

The New Reference Books for Intelligence Professio
Revisado: 06-12-18
I knew Jim Clapper when I was on active duty in the USAF as an intelligence officer. He was and is a great man, a real servant of our democracy. This is an outstanding history, story book, humor in action essay, managerial encyclopedia, and archive of real evidence of how our country works well and how it fails. This should become the new text book for military and civilian volunteers who want to serve in the IC>
