Historia
Following the events of Kristallnacht in 1938, Peter Fleischmann evaded the Gestapo’s roundups in Berlin by way of a perilous journey to England on a Kindertransport rescue, an effort sanctioned by the UK government to evacuate minors from Nazi-controlled areas. But he could not escape the British police, who came for him in the early hours and shipped him off to Hutchinson Camp on the Isle of Man, under suspicion of being a spy for the very regime he had fled.

I learned something compelling
Revisado: 02-15-24
A little-covered story about internment of German refugees in British internment camps during WWII. The story paints a picture of life in the camps, following a German boy taken to Britain as part of an orphan rescue and soon arrested as a possible threat to national security. The other internees bring life to the story and boost his future as an artist.
The narrator was effective and not distracting. The story is compelling and makes me want to research more about this slice of history regarding WWII.

AI Reader, suspected BOT reviews
Revisado: 05-15-21
Overall, this book contains information that is in line with other books on the same and similar topics, HOWEVER, I reported this book to Audible for several reasons. I suspect this book is read by an AI. It's choppy in places, and has many unnatural word and line skips that I've never heard in an Audible purchase before. As my suspicion grew, I started looking closely at the reviews. I've never seen a book with so many 5 star ratings and no dissenting opinion. I thought that was odd, given the AI reader and verbal errors. Then I noticed all the reviews were posted in batches. If you look at the days they were posted, the posts from each day share similar language, with some batches resembling a bad Google Translate result. I suspect the reviews are posted by a BOT. Lastly, the cover of the book is VERY similar to another book I had been considering. Oddly, that book's title is nearly identical and the reviews share the bot-like traits of this one. For your reference, the title of the other book is, Accelerated Learning: Advanced Strategies for Faster Comprehension, Systematic Expertise, Greater Retention. Save yourself the time and money. Avoid both of these books in favor of something with more balanced reviews.

Historia
Two defense experts explore the collision of war, politics, and social media, where the most important battles are now only a click away. Through the weaponization of social media, the Internet is changing war and politics, just as war and politics are changing the Internet. Terrorists livestream their attacks, “Twitter wars” produce real world casualties, and viral misinformation alters not just the result of battles, but the very fate of nations. The result is that war, tech, and politics have blurred into a new kind of battlespace that plays out on our smartphones.

Something all voters should listen to
Revisado: 01-18-20
This book starts with an evolution of technology and how it’s been used for good and for evil over the years. While not strictly necessary to gain an understanding of where we are now, it is interesting. The later chapters describe how social networks have been and continue to be used to manipulate citizens and shape voting behavior. It even describes examples of instances where our trusted media sources from across the political spectrum have been duped into using quotes from fake personas in news stories. The thought that average voters are accepting so much fake news as fact and using it to make decisions is disturbing. I truly wish all voters would read this one before they touch another ballot.

Losing your memory? Can't focus or concentrate? Do you have brain fog or tire easily? Have you lost your zest for life or motivation? Do people tell you this is all a normal part of aging? If so, your brain may be growing old too fast, or degenerating. Modern diets, a stressful lifestyle, and environmental toxins all take their toll on the brain. This doesn't just happen to seniors - brain disorders and degeneration are on the rise for young and old alike. The good news is the brain is extremely adaptable and wants to get well.

Tough to follow as an Audible book
Revisado: 12-16-19
The book contains lots of detail that a reader would want to reference later, making it a tough Audible read. This is definitely not one for commute time or a long run. It might work better if you’re able to listen and take notes.

Historia
In the 1950s, a young Indianapolis minister named Jim Jones preached a curious blend of the gospel and Marxism. His congregation was racially mixed, and he was a leader in the early civil rights movement. Eventually, Jones moved his church, Peoples Temple, to northern California, where he got involved in electoral politics and became a prominent Bay Area leader. But underneath the surface lurked a terrible darkness.

Interesting story
Revisado: 05-07-19
The events of Jonestown culminated two years after I was born, so I grew up with a vague knowledge of it based on pop culture history. It was interesting to hear about the events that lead to it, including Jim Jones’ own childhood and upbringing.
I see many similarities between Jones’ actions and the social engineering we commonly see today. He was a master of manipulation.
I was most surprised to learn about the positive impacts Jones had on integration in Indianapolis.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Drawing on their own cross cultural experience in global mission, O'Brien and Richards show how better self-awareness and understanding of cultural differences in language, time, and social mores allow us to see the Bible in fresh and unexpected ways. Getting beyond our own cultural assumptions is increasingly important for being Christians in our interconnected and globalized world. Learn to read Scripture as a member of the global body of Christ.

Loved this book
Revisado: 04-26-16
I grew up in Illinois, in an area where Lincoln once served as circuit court judge, so learned about him extensively as a child. I really enjoyed this book, in part because it's given me a different perspective on Lincoln, but also because of its in depth analysis of the lives of two great military leaders. I've gained a great respect for both Grant and Lee.
