Historia
By the early ninth century, the Carolingian empire was at the height of its power. The Franks, led by Charlemagne, had built the largest European domain since Rome in its heyday. Though they jockeyed for power, prestige, and profit, the Frankish elites enjoyed political and cultural consensus. But just two generations later, their world was in shambles. Civil war, once an unthinkable threat, had erupted after Louis the Pious’s sons tried to overthrow him—and then placed their knives at the other’s neck. Families who had once charged into battle together now drew each other’s blood.

The drama is exceptional
Revisado: 04-03-25
A family tragedy that divided an empire is collected from fragments and presents its protagonists as making fateful decisions with long term consequences. The Carolingians and the Dark Ages 600 ce-1000 ce are difficult for modern people to really grasp, this illuminates the breakup of the empire. Though I would have liked more of a picture of day to day life the glimpses in the books are vivid.

Historia
In her international bestseller SPQR, Mary Beard told the thousand-year story of ancient Rome. Now she shines her spotlight on the emperors who ruled the Roman empire, from Julius Caesar (assassinated 44 BCE) to Alexander Severus (assassinated 235 CE). Emperor of Rome is not your usual chronological account of Roman rulers, one after another: the mad Caligula, the monster Nero, the philosopher Marcus Aurelius.

An in depth look at an ancient ideology
Revisado: 11-30-24
I liked the humor and balance that the author gives to the subject matter and how she skillfully explains the emperors’ ideology. Sometimes the refusal to engage in speculation is a challenge because it leaves the reader confronted with endless dead ends also the lack of a real sense of chronology may make the discussion rather confusing as she goes from emperor to emperor exploring themes.

What would actually make America great: more people. From one of our foremost policy writers, One Billion Americans is the provocative yet logical argument that if we aren’t moving forward, we’re losing. Vox founder Yglesias invites us to think bigger, while taking the problems of decline seriously. What really contributes to national prosperity should not be controversial: supporting parents and children, welcoming immigrants and their contributions, and exploring creative policies that support growth.

A lot of convincing arguments but…
Revisado: 10-22-24
So I think a futuristic book from several years ago will seem odd to those living a few years in the future because events have already played out to some degree. A sensible immigration increase is fanciful right now, never mind its utility in our politics. However pronatalism is I believe an essential component of American future and this is an important work in that vein and just generally I like the intuitive approach Matt uses.

Historia
Author and historian Tom Holland returns to his roots in Roman history and the audience he cultivated with Rubicon—his masterful, witty, brilliantly researched popular history of the fall of the Roman republic—with Dynasty, a luridly fascinating history of the reign of the first five Roman emperors. Dynasty continues Rubicon's story, opening where that book ended: with the murder of Julius Caesar. This is the period of the first and perhaps greatest Roman emperors. It's a colorful story of rule and ruination, from the rise of Augustus to the death of Nero.

Strong narrative
Revisado: 09-05-24
I like how the author examines themes and worldviews. Psychologically there is clearly more interest and insight on Tiberius and Nero than the other Caesars where the lurid narrative of Suetonius is presented uncritically.

Historia
In the 10 years since his classic Kitchen Confidential first alerted us to the idiosyncrasies and lurking perils of eating out, much has changed for the subculture of chefs and cooks, for the restaurant business and for Anthony Bourdain. Medium Raw explores those changes, tracking Bourdain's strange and unexpected voyage from journeyman cook to globe-traveling professional eater and drinker, and even to fatherhood. Bourdain takes no prisoners as he dissects what he's seen.

Historia
The Pax Romana has long been shorthand for the empire’s golden age. Stretching from Caledonia to Arabia, Rome ruled over a quarter of the world’s population. It was the wealthiest and most formidable state in the history of humankind. Pax is a captivating narrative history of Rome at the height of its power. From the gilded capital to realms beyond the frontier, historian Tom Holland shows ancient Rome in all its glory

Byzantium is too-often considered merely the "eastern rump" of the old Roman Empire, a curious and even unsettling mix of the classical and medieval. Yet it was, according to Professor Harl, "without a doubt the greatest state in Christendom through much of the Middle Ages," and well worth our attention as a way to widen our perspective on everything from the decline of imperial Rome to the rise of the Renaissance.

I really appreciate this lecture series. It’s an overview and the fine shading is for deeper research but his perspective on the cultural impact of the Byzantine period and his sketches of the broad strokes are interesting and insightful
