Inheriting your uncle's supervillain business is more complicated than you might think. Particularly when you discover who's running the place. Charlie's life is going nowhere fast. A divorced substitute teacher living with his cat in a house his siblings want to sell, all he wants is to open a pub downtown, if only the bank will approve his loan. Then his long-lost uncle Jake dies and leaves his supervillain business (complete with island volcano lair) to Charlie. But becoming a supervillain isn't all giant laser death rays and lava pits.

There is precious little story or character development in this novel. It felt like just things happening with no build up or continuity. Many scenes of the book just go on and on like the author is page filling to meet a quota.
The main character Charlie has little depth or personality. As a substitute teacher, why did he never react good, bad or scared to houses blowing up or people being murdered in front of him. Nonsense.
The reveal at the end explains the plot but i suffered for hours waiting for something interesting to happen.
The afterword seems to explain why this book was not good.
I like Will Wheaton narrating other books but the juvenile, screechy and sarcastic cadence in this performance over and over was annoying. Plus it sounded like he was reading very slow at times. Is that to stretch the length of the recording?
I am sorry I spent a credit on it.

Very enjoyable, as were Books 2 and 3. My only complaint is the installments were short books. The story is clearly one continuous story split up too much to sell more books.

I love Dennis E Taylor novels. This one was a mediocre sequel to Outland. A lot of stuff happens but no real plot or point. It was more like a level-building video game where things slowly “bootstrap” up. It has parallels and almost copies concepts from the bobiverse series which i mostly liked.
