Historia
Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen - the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria - took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.

I have enjoyed this one enough to listen to it a second time. Following the Targaryen ancestry certainly makes them more understandable. Well worth the listen!

Historia
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

ALWAYS A FAVORITE!
Revisado: 09-03-17
I was introduced to Jayne Eyre when I was freshman in college. It, and Pride & Prejudice (Jane Austin), became books that I have never tired of reading. Audiobooks have replaced hard print, so it is only natural that these two are a part of my audio library. The story is as compelling today as it was 50+ years ago. The narrator seems to have not changed these many years...though now her voice is a bit different. Ms Newton is an excellent narrator, and she adds much to this wonderful tale of love and steadfastness. The story, the narrator, and the time to listen to it as once I read it...cover to cover with few breaks...makes this a grand way to spend a long quiet Sunday.
This s a fantastic audiobook of a much loved classic!

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

WOW! Real Mars!
Revisado: 09-12-15
What made the experience of listening to The Martian the most enjoyable?
What a well-written, scientific novel! I loved Ben Bova's Mars books, but this one goes a step farther. The humor is so natural in such a difficult unnatural situation. Andy Weir has done a fantastic job of combining mathematics, scientific details, and real human nature. It is a grand read/listen!
What other book might you compare The Martian to and why?
Ben Bova's Mars and Return to Mars
Which character – as performed by R. C. Bray – was your favorite?
Although there are a great group of supporting characters, Mark Watley carries the book!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The first line caught me...the rest of the book is both exciting and moving!
Any additional comments?
My son picked this up as a summer "read" but he finished reading it in one sitting. When he & his family arrived here, he told me it was "a Mama-loving" book! He loaned it to me, and I read it in two days. This sent me to Audible to find the audio of it. Listening to it was every bit as exciting as reading it. It is definitely more than just another scifi story!

Who was your favorite character and why?
The Dragons...their dry wit and devotion to their riders make them special!

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Loved the Painting!
Revisado: 08-18-14
Would you listen to The Goldfinch again? Why?
'Bought this one shortly after viewing the painting, The Goldfinch, at the High Museum in Atlanta. The painting was part of the visiting exhibit that included, Girl with the Pearl Earring. The painting was far superior to the book. The editor should have his/her backside kicked for allowing the over-verbiage of Ms. Tartt...parts of the book should have been edited to lesson tedium. I listened to the whole thing...every word, but it will not be a book I listen to again.
How I wish I felt that Theo had redeeming qualities...he sees his problem but he does not do anything about it. That is the hardest part to swallow...he just does not learn from past experiences. I guess that is very realistic; I have known people like that, but I do not enjoy listening to that type of story.
Mr. Pittu's reading of the book is excellent. I think HE is the reason I made it all the way through the book.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Improvements could easily have been made by succinct editing, less repetition of the "problems" Theo has. It would lessen the tedium of sections.
Which character – as performed by David Pittu – was your favorite?
Hobie is my favorite character, along with Boris. Pittu's use of voice-character inflection was excellent for both. He also did a very good job of expressing Theo's hopelessness!
If you could rename The Goldfinch, what would you call it?
I wish I could think of a better title; it seems a shame to saddle that lovely, precious painting with such a story.
Any additional comments?
I have not read any of Tartt's other stories and I am not sure I will try. She does a wonderful job portraying hopelessness and weak personalities. I am so glad I have listened to this one instead of reading the hard-copy. I wish I had more positive things to say. To a point, I enjoyed it...but I had to make myself finish listening.

Wonderful Series...the Earth's Children books!
Revisado: 06-05-11
To begin with...I am a Jean Auel fan. I have read AND listened to all 6 of the books. They are well written and really give you something to think about. Her characters are as normal and flawed as real people. They dither and misinterpret other folks...just like we do today. Sandra Burr is a very good reader, changing her voice to indicate characters and situations. All Six Books are a good adventure in the world 10,000-20,000 years ago.
