Historia
Senator Frank Church of Idaho was an unlikely hero. He led congressional opposition to the Vietnam War and had become a scathing, radical critic of what he saw as American imperialism around the world. But he was still politically ambitious, privately yearning for acceptance from the foreign policy establishment that he hated and eager to run for president. Despite his flaws, Church would show historic strength in his greatest moment, when in the wake of Watergate he was suddenly tasked with investigating abuses of power in the intelligence community.

If you can get through the first 100 or so pages, this book is impossible to put down. Fascinating!

Historia
A masterful biography of the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations during World War II, Citizen Soldiers provides a compelling account of the extraordinary stories of ordinary men in their fight for democracy. From the high command on down to the enlisted men, Stephen E. Ambrose draws on hundreds of interviews and oral histories from men on both sides who were there.

Excellent book
Revisado: 10-05-23
The book itself is excellent. It weaves interesting real life stories into the vast amount of information relayed about the war. The narrator is good, but not great. There is one voice used for Americans, one for British, another for German, and it just sounds hokey. What I could not get over was the way he absolutely butchered anything French. Since the majority of the book takes place in France, seems important that the narrator properly pronounce French places.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Carey Mulligan is perfection
Revisado: 06-09-23
Though I didn’t entirely connect with the story, I thoroughly enjoyed Carey Mulligan’s narration. She has such a smooth, elegant voice.

Historia
The Corrections is a grandly entertaining novel for the new century--a comic, tragic masterpiece about a family breaking down in an age of easy fixes. After almost 50 years as a wife and mother, Enid Lambert is ready to have some fun. Unfortunately, her husband, Alfred, is losing his sanity to Parkinson's disease, and their children have long since flown the family nest to the catastrophes of their own lives. Enid has set her heart on an elusive goal: bringing her family together for one last Christmas at home.

Almost brilliant
Revisado: 05-23-23
Much of this book reminded me of Tom Wolfe, the little descriptions and catch phrases are hysterical. I loved this portrait of the American Family at the turn of the century: how the parents have lived in the same house forever and never throw anything away, how everyone has expectations of each other and everyone lies about the current state of their lives. My issues with the book are 1) none of the characters were even mildly likeable until the end—it made it hard to root for them for more than 500 pages; and 2) it seemed like everyone miraculously got better once Alfred was out of the house…like the whole was neatly wrapped up with a bow in the end. Too happily ever after for me.

Perhaps McEwan’s finest book. The way he intertwined fictional characters with real life events is captivating. I remember why I fell in love with his books 20 years ago and he remains one of my very favorite authors. And Simon McBurney’s narration is perfection.

Excellent
Revisado: 01-31-23
Brilliantly written, I enjoyed this very much, particularly the parts about Mrs. Nesbit, the White House’s chief housekeeper, and the telling of how FDR balanced the labor movement with the need for mobilization. The narration was quite good save for the mispronunciation of several recurring words.

Historia
This ambitious, electrifying work traces the harrowing journey of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah, a beautifully illuminated Hebrew manuscript created in 15th-century Spain. When it falls to Hanna Heath, an Australian rare-book expert, to conserve this priceless work, the series of tiny artifacts she discovers in its ancient binding—an insect wing fragment, wine stains, salt crystals, a white hair—only begin to unlock its deep mysteries.

She's obviously a very talented writer, but I got a bit lost with this story. I just think the author tried to do a bit too much with it.
