Historia
After moving from a small country town to Seattle, Heather Baxter marries Tom, a widowed doctor with a young son and teenage daughter. A working vacation overseas seems like the perfect way to bring the new family together, but once they’re deep in the Australian outback, the jet-lagged and exhausted kids are so over their new mom. When they discover remote Dutch Island, off-limits to outside visitors, the family talks their way onto the ferry. But as soon as they set foot on the island, which is run by a tightly knit clan of locals, everything feels wrong.

Narrator ruined this for me.
Revisado: 02-09-23
Maybe this is because I am hard of hearing, but the narrator ended each sentence in a whisper. The voices of the characters were extremely loud compared to the voice of the narrator. The tapering of the narration to a whisper at the end of each sentence was extraordinarily annoying. I suppose it was an attempt to know right in breathless Anticipation. Just try to listen to that for a couple of hours. I would say everything else about the book was OK but pretty ordinary.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Story of a troubled man
Revisado: 01-24-23
If you are a follower of the Royals, I am sure that you will love this book. It is the unfiltered opinion of a member of the family. Prince Harry is clearly a deeply troubled man. The book is interesting for the insights into Prince Harry’s psyche more than for insights into the machinations of the royal family, although that was interesting to me as well. I am not, or was not a royal watcher up to this point. I was kind of sucked in by the Netflix series, and now that I have read the book, I guess I am officially a member of the club. if you are interested in the book purely as literature and performance, it will be surprisingly satisfying. I was astounded at the feeling, that Prince Harry put into the narration, complete with imitating the voices of those whom he was quoting. I don’t think I have heard any professional narrator do a better job. The only negative comment that I have, and it is not really significant, is that I wished, by the end of the book that he would stop whining.

Historia
Humankind has explored every continent on earth, climbed its tallest mountains, and gone into space. But the largest areas of our planet remain a mystery: the deep oceans. At over 36,000 feet deep, these areas closest to earth’s core have remained nearly impossible to reach - until now. Technological innovations, engineering breakthroughs and the derring-do of a unique team of engineers and scientists, led by explorer Victor Vescovo, brought together an audacious global quest to dive to the deepest points of all five oceans for the first time in history.

Good lesson for project managers
Revisado: 12-25-20
Good explication of the problems facing engineering projects. I’m not sure what the Takeaway is but t it was certainly an interesting read. There were a couple of technical mistakes but that is to be expected when non-technical people write about engineering projects. For instance, talking about the increase in speed after installation of a sonar dome on the bow of the test boat, the narrator states that it was due to some sort of “Bernoulli effect.“ In fact, the drag reduction of a bow sonar bulb comes from a reduction in wave resistance.

psychobabble mixed with conjecture, liberal dogma
Revisado: 07-24-20
If armchair psychoanalysis is your thing you will love the beginning of this book. it gets better when it comes to actual or perceived events in the Trump family. then, near the end, it falls on its face when the author just echos liberal tropes.

Historia
As President Trump’s national security advisor, John Bolton spent many of his 453 days in the room where it happened, and the facts speak for themselves. The result is one of the few White House memoirs to date by a top-level official. With almost daily access to the president, John Bolton has produced a precise rendering of his days in and around the Oval Office. What Bolton saw astonished him: a president for whom getting reelected was the only thing that mattered, even if it meant endangering or weakening the nation.

Egotistical Backstabbing Snake
Revisado: 07-17-20
it was very hard to listen to this screed by a man who never met a negotiation that he liked. When he showed up at the table, by his account, there were groans all around. Everyone but him was a misguided idiot. If only they would listen to him! If only he could speak his mind! Of course, there was always a back door to advance his views. He just had to keep the know-nothing president in the dark, and keep any others with different views away. There is only so much garbage that one can digest, and near the end, I wasn't sure I could finish. There were some good insights into life in the Trump White House, where everyone seemed determined to misdirect the president.

love freedom? Listen to this
Revisado: 06-22-20
I listened to the two journalist who wrote wrote books about this same subject. I would recommend their books as well, but they did not have the same impact as this one. The scariest thing about it is that even after these revelations you can be pretty sure that the abuses are still taking place. The mendacity of our public officials is boggling, as is the freedom that we have given up to fight the so-called war on terror.

Great Period Book
Revisado: 09-06-19
Really delved into the nitty-gritty of British culture just after World War I, and then just after World War II. the narrator was great. He was terrific about the different British accents, Scottish accent, didn't stumble over French or Russian words and phrases. for sure, I wished that I had had a little bit more background about his earlier books. I also felt that in the depiction of the times, the suffering of Ordinary People was totally ignored. This didn't really take away from the enjoyment of the mystery and intrigue.

this was a fascinating book yes. I gained a lot of insight into Justice Ginsburg's outlook, explained in a very entertaining way. I had no idea of the role of her parents and her husband played. she explained the legal aspects of important cases in very Plain and understandable language.

Historia
In December 2017 the famous porn star August Ames committed suicide in a park in the Conejo Valley. It happened a day after she’d been the victim of a pile-on, via Twitter, by fellow porn professionals - punishment for her tweeting something deemed homophobic. A month later, August’s husband, Kevin, connected with Jon Ronson to tell the story of how Twitter bullying killed his wife. What neither Kevin nor Ronson realized was that Ronson would soon hear rumors and secrets hinting at a very different story - something mysterious and unexpected and terrible.

Historia
This, the first in the splendid series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, Royal Navy, and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against the thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the road of broadsides as the great ships close in battle.

this is a great read for anyone who likes sailing
Revisado: 04-23-18
if you like historical novels and if you like to learn something as you're being entertained this is a great book. the description of the naval tactics really makes you think and takes you back two times past. I have read online. A lot of the technical Naval jargon put some people off but most people can get by it and be still entertained by the story. I loved the dialect and the periid Language. the narrator did so many voices so well.
