(I am a pro dog trainer with credentials)
I can't even listen to a full chapter without wanting to argue. I'll start with the good: the book is well laid out and follows a nice, logical progression. I like that the author spends time on the legalities of service dogs and ESAs and has a primarily positive reinforcement training program laid out. I like using kibble for rewards, especially for service dogs. I like the use of clickers. I like the progression from few distractions to more.

The author does not have a good grasp of learning theory in dogs. There are tons of books laid out for beginners that can talk about the science of behavior and learning theory without dismissing dogs as "too old to be trained" or worse yet, blaming handlers for their dog's behavior or lack thereof. the reality is far more complicated. I wish there was more talk about what characteristics make a dog suitable for service dog training rather than an emphasis on specific breeds.

The training exercises make sense if you are a human but I think most handlers will have a lot of problems following the directions, not to mention how difficult the loose leash walking exercises will be with any kind of physical limitations. It would have been nice to have some suggestions for people who can't move well. some advice like a tether to settle will work but this particular method is outdated and may have some leash fallout for some dogs, though there is room to argue that those dogs are unsuitable as service dogs in the first place. Loading a clicker for 20 times will also be excruciating for some dogs, but I get where they are coming from. That can be far shorter since the pattern if click-treat should be reliable enough to establish itself without being kind numbingly boring, not to mention the utter lack of timing advice..how fast? How slow? how to troubleshoot with a puppy with the attention span of a fruit fly?

Also, recommending a service dog registry where I can register anything as a service dog?? There is no national registry, and disabled people are more likely to live in poverty. Having them blow money on some garbage like that hurts everyone. There is no testing of the dog's skills.

If you know absolutely nothing about training, you may find it useful as a very vague guide for a logical progression of skills needed for service dogs. I don't recommend it though, but I also don't know if a better book or guide short of finding a trainer in your area who specializes in service dog training.

first off, after doing a little research the author does not have any actual experience with aggressive dogs. a quick look at her other published works shows no other books on dog training, instead on a variety of general topics

secondly, some of her advice could get you bit. without an understanding of counterconditioning, desensitization, and a handle on canine body language, people using these techniques may not find themselves as successful as they would like. The theory itself is sound enough, but it lacks the nuance to adequately help someone with an aggressive dog

ok, it's dry. Really dry. the info on operant conditioning, behavior modification, reinforcement, and punishment is valuable, although I have some strong beliefs about punishment that made it hard to not argue with.

For positive reinforcement trainers, it's valuable to know about punishers, even if you find it hard to listen to. I did, since I find the use positive punishment largely unethical. So-called balanced trainers may find this book more useful, as the section on punishers is very informative and I do like that the book strives to be neutral on the topic.

I'm a little teary writing this after Chloe's story, but this is an uplifting, hopeful, and wonderful guide to helping cats and kittens.

Hannah's warm and compassionate voice just flows with love for her tiny fosters. 10/10, highly reccommend
