Another Great Adventure
Revisado: 11-01-24
Following the passing of Susie Berneis, finding another narrator must be a challenge. I do like this new narrator with the exception of how she portrays Becky and Jim Wainwright. They sound like they are 90!

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

I have never returned a Louise Penny book before.
Revisado: 10-31-24
I understand that a more authentic Quebecois voice is desirable, but a talented voice actor is also needed. When I am paying more attention to the narration than to the story, it means the narrator is distracting from the beautiful writing. I genuinely couldn't distinguish who was speaking, and that made for a tough listen. Everything sounded flat. There was no resonance to the voices - no richness or warmth. And I realize that it's not even about distinguishing between the characters' voices via pitch or accent - there is a certain cadence, inflection, and personality that Cosham and Bathurst gave to the characters that made them distinct. Gamache is no longer distinguished. It's like ordering café au lait served in a bowl and getting warm water in a paper cup. I will read this one - maybe. I don't have time to read traditional books, so I am sad that I may miss this one.
I returned the book to Audible. I have NEVER returned a Louise penny book, but I just could not finish with this narrator.

Something Changed.........
Revisado: 06-09-24
I do miss Susan Boyce's narration, but I also wondered if Ms. Cahoon has someone who is doing part of the writing now. Some of the history of the series is changing. Josh is now just five years older than Jill, and he sounds like a completely different character. This book seems incredibly slow, the mystery lacked creativity, and the characters all seem one dimensional - and I LOVE this series. I am sad if it is changing.

Revisado: 07-31-21
I love Maisie Dobbs. This is the first book narrated by Cassidy. Her British accent is passable, but her pronunciation of Maurice as "Morris" is so annoying and puzzling. How was this not addressed? I hope it was changed for subsequent recordings. Her French and Indian accents are grating. If I did not need the content to make sense of the story, I would fast forward.

Not A Surprise Ending
Revisado: 07-06-19
I have listened to both books in this series. I really like the narrator . She does a great job. Although the storylines are good, they are not great. In both books, I knew who did it well before the end. There were simply not enough alternative suspects in either book. I I'm not sure I would listen to a third book.

Now she's back on the outside and focused on one mission: to be a cop once more. Her only shot to be a true blue again is to solve a major case on her own, and prove she has the right to wear the uniform.

Loved it! Hope to hear more from the Perrys!
Revisado: 12-04-10
I don't understand the mixed reviews for this one. I have listened to most of Baldacci's works, and I am a big fan. I thought this was one of his best. I did not the many twists coming, and I thought the characters were great. The only thing I can think of that might make this better is a different narrator - NOT because of Ron McClarty - he's great, and I love him in the Camel Club series. Since two of the main characters are female, perhaps his narration for them seems incongruent. There are still some questions I would love to have answered, and I hope there will be more. For me, this is DEFINITELY credit-worthy.

Book Great - Narration difficult to listen to
Revisado: 04-23-10
I love Tess Monaghan and jumped in right after I finished "In Big Trouble." When I started the book, I honestly could not tell if the narrator was male or female. I came back Audible and was shocked to see the narrator was Barbara Rosenblatt whom I have heard in numerous audio books and always enjoyed. Her voice is unusually gruff and abrasive. Also, her characterization of the major players seems a bit on the sarcastic side, plus, some of the voices sound like they're from the deep south rather than Baltimore. I am planning on going through the series in order, and almost dread listening to the ones by Rosenblatt. I may read them instead. I would say to listen to a sample. This makes me sad. She's always been one of my bankable narrators who is a pleasure to listen to.

The Book of God reads like a novel, dramatizing the sweep of biblical events, bringing to life the men and women of this ancient book in vivid detail and dialogue. From Abraham wandering in the desert to Jesus teaching the multitudes on a Judean hillside, this award-winning bestseller follows the biblical story from start to finish.

Avoid audiobooks narrated by author!!
Revisado: 11-21-05
The book content is actually pretty good - basically a novelization of Scripture with conversations between biblical figures extrapolated from the facts. I think this book helps to understand the linear flow of scripture.
HOWEVER, the narration often made me cringe! The dramatic tone was often frustrating - the pitch and volume of the narration often rose and fell in an unnatural pattern. I think I would love this book with a different (trained) narrator.
Personally, I have not had positive experiences with audiobooks narrated by the author. I actually did not realize that the author was narrating, but was so frustrated by the narration, that I decided to check and. . . sure enough - the author was narrating. For me, it just means I need to watch for this and read reviews before I purchase!
