From trailblazing Michigan governor and rising Democratic star Gretchen Whitmer comes an unconventionally honest, personal, and funny account of her remarkable life and career, full of insights that guided her through a global pandemic, showdowns with high-profile bullies, and even a kidnapping and assassination plot.

Outstanding look at a good person but
Revisado: 12-19-24
Ultimately a bit short on policy, I.e., what would Governor Whitmer bring to a presidency, e.g. re health care, manufacturing, taxation, economy, foreign policy (maybe not). But a little more serious and in depth look at what she thinks should happen in her state and the country beyond the important lightning rod issues she describes well would be useful.

Historia
You are about to travel to Edgecombe St. Mary, a small village in the English countryside filled with rolling hills, thatched cottages, and a cast of characters both hilariously original and as familiar as the members of your own family. Among them is Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired), the unlikely hero of Helen Simonson's wondrous debut. Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, Major Pettigrew is one of the most indelible characters in contemporary fiction, and from the very first page of this remarkable novel he will steal your heart.

I found ihe Major fascinating , admirable and enagaing.; a lovely archetypical Englishman. The book puts up the provincialism and racism of his village in a way that does not seem unjutifiably mean-pirited. Americans do not come off well...

Historia
Bubblegum is set in an alternate present-day world in which the internet does not exist and has never existed. Rather, a wholly different species of interactive technology - a "flesh-and-bone robot" called the Curio - has dominated both the market and the cultural imagination since the late 1980s. Belt Magnet, who as a boy in greater Chicago became one of the lucky first adopters of a Curio, is now writing his memoir, and through it we follow a singular man out of sync with the harsh realities of a world he feels alien to but must find a way to live in.

Bizarre & disturbing. Narration = compelling
Revisado: 01-09-24
You may know Michel Foucault and his biography -in particular, details about his proclivities. I did not. At first I thought that the section where what Foucault did, and what Jonboat Pellmore-Jason believes can be learned from it, was completely and shockingly invented. I had to look Foulcault up and read details of the thing he did (but did not invent). i used the Internet which does not exist in 2013 Bubblegum, In most other contexts– books movies, conversations, I don't know, dreams- I would have given up at that point. Call me squeamish and straightish. But the earnestness with which Triple J approaches this topic captured me. as did the many other sections of this disturbing book. Levin does Dickens proud: Belt Magnet. WTH? Belt Magnet!

Historia
In the spring of 1915, a young Austro-Czech naval lieutenant Ottokar Prohaska finds himself posted to the minuscule Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian Submarine Service in the Adriatic port of Pola. In some trepidation at first, because he has no experience whatever of submarines, his fears are soon set at rest when he discovers that nobody else has either: least of all his superiors.

Fabulous picaresque -great writer, great reader
Revisado: 08-03-23
It very much feels as though Biggins had access to a real memoir from which to pull military, geographic and cultural minutiae from The Great War. Prohaska's inherent decency (contrasted sometimes with his necessary brutality as the commander of a submarine) is often stirring. The writing! I loved listening. He has many lovely casual metaphors: a man reminds him of "an unmade bed". It is long and there are many sudden changes of fortune, rescues etc, there was plenty of detail and though the characters were maybe only 2.5 dimensional, every one of them carried Otto forward,

Too plausible
Revisado: 01-27-23
1. I like long reads. I think this is the longest audiobook I've experienced.
2. The multiple narrators give life to the text; hard for me to imagine an audio version with a single narrator that would be tolerable.
3. Watch Tim Dechristopher being interviewed by Bill Moyers. He went from civil disobedience regarding fossil fuels to an acknowledgement that climate change is not a problem that will be solved. He said that it is now important to help people live in the inevitable changed environment. Eco-t e r r o r seems exceedingly rare - also read about the ELF.
4. While I am writing this, my partner is listening to a live audio of legislators and interest group representatives speaking at a conservation voters forum, addressing our state's actions regarding aspects of climate change. Lots of optimism but in light of The Deluge, hearing someone say that "politicians need to be held accountable" made me just shake my head (and chuckle morbidly). I really don't know a better path forward but it is clear that our current "system" of capitalism and democracy-ish government won't do it.
5. I LIKE that there is an attempt to realistically include aspects of our society's changes with respect to race and gender. Calling it woke does nothing to characterize it one way or the other. Like Sarah Silverman said the other day in awe of a Newsmax reporter asking Biden if he is woke: “I think we’re just communicating wrong, because, like, what I know ‘woke’ to mean is, like, learning new things about people or the world, and then acting accordingly. Like, basic kindness. Maybe a gesture of care to people who are more vulnerable than you. You know what, actually you wouldn’t like it — it’s Jesus stuff.”
6. It is painful. A particularly scary component -wait, it's ALL scary, is the evolution (accelerating) of the surveillance state as AI is adopted for more and more things.

Revisado: 03-21-22
It was impossible to listen. Emotionless. Oddly slurred speech. Bad pronunciation -starting with Moren county for Marin County. Even if one could tolerate this voice, it did not match the character in the book -well educated kid from one of the wealthiest suburbs in the country. TRY AGAIN.

Historia
Yesterday John Fontanelli was just a pizza delivery guy in New York City. One day later, he's the richest man in the world. One trillion dollars - one million times one million - $1,000,000,000,000: more money than anyone could imagine. For generations the Vacchis, an old Italian family of lawyers and asset managers, had supervised the fortune as it grew over five hundred years, until one particular date that the benefactor had stipulated in his will.

How does a librarian from New Jersey end up in a convenience store on Vancouver Island in the middle of the night, playing Bible Scrabble with a Korean physicist and a drunk priest? She gets married to the wrong man for starters - she didn't know he was "that kind of Catholic" - and ends up in St. Cloud, Minnesota. She gets a job in a New Age bookstore, wanders toward Buddhism without realizing it, and acquires a dog. Things get complicated after that.

Other reviewer's displeasure. It helped to run it at 1.4x. Yes, accents swerved sometimes but not enough to matter. Story is quite straightforward and actually, at this point, even with a bunch of conflict, this one felt like a bit of a breather.
