Enjoyable Read
Revisado: 09-04-24
So, I think I got equal enjoyment out of this one as I did out of the first one. Part of that could be WW narration. But ultimately, there were some minor "overpowering" things that I didn't like at the end that made the story less believable for me...which is crazy given the overall context and plot. The other thing that took me away from the book is I felt the side story of the loFive's quest would have been more interesting and I can hope for another story there.

Space Finances
Revisado: 08-24-24
Not a continuation of Saturn's Children, I have to say I liked this one better since I find the world created very interesting. And financial crime in space is, well, very different! That being said, beyond the finances and the space setting, the rest of the book didn't catch me. Maybe that is because of the large explanatory pieces, or something else. I'm not sure, just left feeling only partially satisfied.

Historia
In Saturn's Children, Freya is an obsolete android concubine in a society where humans haven't existed for hundreds of years. A rigid caste system keeps the Aristos, a vindictive group of humanoids, well in control of the lower, slave-chipped classes. So when Freya offends one particularly nasty Aristo, she's forced to take a dangerous courier job off-planet.

I don't know about this one. Narration was good. Story was OK. Setting was fascinating...I have mixed feelings because I am moving into the second book which is usually a good sign.

Historia
In a frozen, apocalyptic landscape, destruction abounds: great walls of ice overrun the world and secretive governments vie for control. Against this surreal, yet eerily familiar broken world, an unnamed narrator embarks on a hallucinatory quest for a strange and elusive "glass-girl" with silver hair. He crosses icy seas and frozen plains, searching ruined towns and ransacked rooms, all to free her from the grips of a tyrant known only as the warden and save her before the ice closes all around.

Didn't work for me
Revisado: 08-18-24
I guess I just didn't get it. It did get better toward the end, but at that point I had little invested. Maybe reading this instead of listening would have been better, but I don't think it could have improved it that much

Good Read
Revisado: 08-06-24
I found this to be a very interesting look into the industry and the commentary about why it is the way it is was fascinating. There were some contradictions in the book but I was happy to see that the author explained them.

Historia
Many of us know we're putting too much pressure on our kids - and on ourselves - but how do we get off this crazy train? We want our children to succeed, to be their best, and to do their best, but what if they are not on board? A few years ago, Ned Johnson and Bill Stixrud started noticing the same problem from different angles: even high-performing kids were coming to them acutely stressed and lacking any real motivation. Many complained that they had no real control over their lives.

Good Advice
Revisado: 08-01-24
This was good and had a lot of good advice that I agree with. At the same time, I don't believe it is as universal as the authors say. I'd be curious to see their theories applied more to struggling students from struggling backgrounds (i felt they did speak a lot about struggling students from great backgrounds), but definitely thought the insight into high achievers was great.

Interesting concept and cut from a similar cloth as the rest of the authors books. The novella was nice, although there definitely was enough for more here. I'll not pass up a Mira Grant story.

Historia
FBI Agent Nell Flynn hasn't been home in 10 years. Nell and her father, Homicide Detective Martin Flynn, have never had much of a relationship. When Martin Flynn dies in a motorcycle accident, Nell returns to the house she grew up in so that she can spread her father's ashes and close his estate. At the behest of her father's partner, Detective Lee Davis, Nell becomes involved in an investigation into the murders of two young women in Suffolk County. The further Nell digs, the more likely it seems to her that her father should be the prime suspect.

Entertaining but just ok
Revisado: 07-21-24
I went with Four stars because I was entertained and interested. But overall the book was only okay. The ending was less twist and more right field for me and there were a few things that I didn't quite immediately jump on, like why she suspected her father in the first place when he otherwise was made to sound like a great cop.

I appreciated this more than I liked it
Revisado: 07-19-24
Simple story set up in a fairytale-like way. I appreciated what the author did and thought it was interesting and captured what he wanted. Maybe it is because the type of story isn't deep enough for me, or there was too much happening for it to be a simple fairy tale, but this just didn't land well for me. Although I always appreciate a narrator reading his own books when it works out!
