Historia
An invitation from a hotel owner to stay at his new seaside hotel provides Evie, Countess of Woodridge, with the perfect opportunity to fulfill her maid's dream of vacationing by the seaside. However, the prospect of spending an entire week strolling along the pier makes Evie realize she is no longer cut out for a life of leisure. Clearly, she is missing the exhilaration she experienced during the last few murder cases she had become involved in. When a young woman dies right outside their hotel, Evie finds the perfect opportunity to distract herself.

New accent ruins it
Revisado: 11-22-22
Tom now has an extremely strong Boston accent, and it's unbearable. He went from being a classy chauffeur to a character straight out of Good Will Hunting, and it's awful. It's not that the narrator does a bad Boston accent, it's that it's so over-the-top & makes absolutely no sense for it to come out of nowhere. There's also no way her grandmother would've hired someone who spoke like that to begin with. I couldn't make it past the 1st chapter, and I won't be listening to any more of the books, which saddens me bc they'd been so much fun!

Should’ve stopped at 9
Revisado: 10-13-21
I just binge-listened to the entire series over the course of a handful of days and this book is awful and tarnishes the entire series simply bc it’s the last book and definitely the most memorable. It’s a Heinz 57 of delicate, social trigger-topics addressed as insensitively as possible. The extreme racial stereotyping is the worst and is absolutely inexcusable. And, just when you think it can’t possibly get more offensive, it does.
I know you’ll still listen to the book after reading this bc it’s impossible to believe that this could be true after having listened to 9 fun books, and I can’t fault you for that - if I were you, I probably wouldn’t believe me, either, since it’s such a drastic departure from the tone & content of the previous books in the series. Just remember that I told you so!

Historia
Life is pretty bad when you’re jealous of an old mutt and an autistic brother, Benjamin thinks to himself. If only he knew how to talk to girls, he could achieve both his goals: get a reasonably hot-looking girlfriend and thus get respect from his wrestling teammates. But communication doesn’t come easy in the McDowell family.

Description was promising, but the book was disappointing
Revisado: 12-04-20
I called it quits after an hour and a half. I’m sure that, eventually, the main character, Ben, would start to mature and grow as a person, but there’s only so much unjustified, woe-is-me whining I can handle before I get fed up. My tolerance of the victim mentality is pretty low, as well. He’s supposed to be 16 and starting his junior year, but he’s incredibly immature - the things he thinks and says are on par with a naïve six-year-old. He’s EXTREMELY callous when discussing his older brother, who’s on the autism spectrum, and thinks it’s appropriate to hint to a classmate that, if she would lose weight and dress differently, she would be more attractive. My hope was that his behavior would change with the introduction of the love interest mentioned in the description, Emily, but she has yet to make an appearance. It’s really frustrating when authors beat the proverbial dead horse when painting a picture of someone’s character. I just wanted to yell “I get it! Point made! Move on!”
The narration, however, was much better than the material. His voice is perfect for the age group & I’d definitely listen to him again.

Kat and Yasmine! Do not dally! Come straight home after work. Kat, don’t take the long route from the subway station just so you can pass by Cute Hot Dog Guy. This is important! I’ve had the best day. You won’t believe it. There I was in my preschool classroom, washing a bit of poo out of some soggy trousers, when this absolute babe came to collect his nephew from my class. Truthfully, I thought I’d blacked out for a moment when I first saw him. He was a proper hunk with glorious brown hair, quite tall, and he had these arms. Are muscly arms supposed to turn me on?

Great story, but narration killed it for me
Revisado: 11-15-20
I love Teddy Hamilton, but the 7 (out of 26) chapters he narrates amount to a grand total of 1:05 (out of 9:20). Violet Wilson is new to me and, though her female voices are absolutely FANTASTIC, her male voice sounded like a middle-aged woman with a smoker’s rasp trying to be seductive. The story itself is hysterical (typical R.S. Grey), and her narration of the 3 female leads only makes it more so, but, 3 hours in I couldn’t handle her male voice knowing I still had 6 more hours to go & I ended up returning the book.

Hannah’s ex has some nerve. First he breaks up with her in a text, and now he thinks he can take soccer away from her? Think again. As the captain of their intramural team, her ex might be able to kick her off his team, but he can’t stop her from playing for their rivals. The fact that her new team captain is her ex’s arch nemesis? Even better. Playing for River’s team on the other side of town is the perfect payback. When her ex sees them together and gets the wrong idea…well, what’s the harm in playing along?

Cute story, but it’s missing a chapter
Revisado: 08-12-20
Great narration and fun, lighthearted story, but a key chapter is missing. Instead of hearing River’s chapter detailing the arrangement they made to “fake date,” you hear a repeat of chapter 10. If it weren’t for the book description, you’d have no idea what had happened. Still worth a credit, though.

Outstanding narrator
Revisado: 06-11-20
It’s a really fun story that’s cute, but not mushy, and it moves along well for the entirety. There’s no over-the-top angst or drama, or annoying characters - it’s just an entertaining, lighthearted romantic comedy. PLUS, the narrator is amazing, especially her Irish accent.

I’d kill to be the kind of dancer my mom wants me to be, but it’s just not in the cards. I’m sick of dieting. I'll never fit into the perfect ballerina mold, and I’m tired of wishing that I could. I’m over it. I’m done trying. I’m perfectly content to dance alone in the dark while the rest of the school is sleeping.

2.5 stars: Over-the-top teenage angst
Revisado: 03-19-20
After 4 hours of listening to Ethan rave about Collette and repeatedly tell her she’s beautiful, followed by Collette rejecting his compliments and having an internal dialogue where she constantly talks about her size and how she’s too big to be a ballerina, I called it quits. I enjoy lighthearted, angsty, high school romances every now and then, but Collette was insufferable. I gave the story 2 stars simply because there are Harry Potter references.

VERY disappointing
Revisado: 03-15-20
The book’s length is 2:45, and about 2:30 of it is listening to an amazingly resilient 13 year old girl with Tourette Syndrome cope with being mocked & harassed every single school day by her peers, and then spending her evenings with an egocentric, callous mom whose primary concern is finding a husband and who’s annoyed by her daughter’s tics. The one friend she supposedly has shuns her when in public, so calling him a friend is a bit of a stretch.
As a mental health professional, I was extremely disappointed with the storyline and, for anyone who has Tourette’s, it’d probably be borderline traumatic since the takeaway is that, if you’re diagnosed with TS, you’ll be treated like crap.
Don’t be fooled by the flowery, lighthearted cover, or think that the focus will be whether or not a friendship survives one person moving away - everything about the cover is misleading.

Great Story
Revisado: 03-14-20
This was a unique, well-written story with an array of interesting characters. You may feel as though you have a pretty good idea of “who-dun-it,” but then there’s an unexpected twist near the end.
The problem is the narration. His voice is pleasant to listen to, and he does a great job with giving each character a distinct voice, but, when speaking as the main character, Joe, the cadence is off and he’s so monotone the majority of the time that I had to start skipping forward midway through. Yes, Joe is pretty subdued, but he’s not so emotionally numb that his affect and speech would be so flat.
