We are 40 years into the future, and London is a city in decay. John Watson has returned from medical service in the war in Afghanistan and lives by himself in a run-down part of town. Historia
The young man with the shock of white-blond hair lay spread-eagled on the floor, surrounded by fallen books. His hand reached out to the scattered pages, as though he was trying to tell her something. But who is he? How did he come to be killed in Flora’s ordinary little bookshop? Flora finds out he was staying at the Priory Hotel, and when the gardener suddenly dies in its beautiful grounds only a few days later, she is certain that something untoward is happening in her quiet village by the sea.

Boring, predictable, and needs editing
Revisado: 07-01-22
The author struggles with developing characters and keeping the plot moving forward. The main character is annoying, repetitive, and obtuse. Often the dialogue is not believable and there are annoying plot flaws. Other than the main character’s love interest, no other characters are developed. The historical details included are just basic facts that everyone has heard before, and the language doesn’t always match the time period.
Bottom line, this is not a book for fans of mystery. It’s boring and needs editing. The heroine isn’t much of a heroine—she is just argumentative for no reason under the guise of being “feisty.” I enjoyed the narrator, but due to the writing it was hard to distinguish who was talking at times.

Great mystery!
Revisado: 01-20-20
Unlike many of the other reviewers, I was NIOT gifted this book in exchange for a review. Rather, this series was recommended to me by another mystery enthusiast. This was the earliest book in the series that I could find on Audible. That’s a shame because I loved listening to it. This was well-written and plotted. The characters are good and the plot had wonderfully creepy turns and twists. I also enjoyed the narration. I will definitely listen to the next in the series!

Silliness
Revisado: 01-03-20
I love murder mysteries, but they need to include suspense and allow the reader to make logical deductions to solve the case along with the detective. This book was silly and fun, but I guessed who the murderer was immediately after all of the characters were introduced because the villain is so predictable. However, I couldn’t support that guess with evidence from the text because half of the essential clues were not revealed until the “detective” revealed the murderer. Blah. Not a murder mystery but more of a farcical mystery romp. Not my cup of tea.

Wonderful Story, Fable/Allegory not Fantasy
Revisado: 06-28-17
This is the sweet story of a child who feels different from her peers because of her intelligence and unapologetically unique view of the world. Many reviewers have posted about this being a fantasy-but the fantasy elements merely serve as a series of fables/fairytales that the grandmother tells the young heroine to help her understand and cope with the world--sort of allegories. The actual story is not fantasy at all. As with A Man Called Ove--the story is about a character who learns to relate and interact with those around her. It differs from Ove in that things don't fit together as perfectly for the heroine--and this makes it refreshing and more believable. Very well written and wonderfully narrated but slower moving and less fluid than Ove. Great book!

Historia
Yoshitaka, who was about to leave his marriage and his wife, is poisoned by arsenic-laced coffee and dies. His wife, Ayane, is the logical suspect—except that she was hundreds of miles away when he was murdered. The lead detective, Tokyo Police Detective Kusanagi, is immediately smitten with her and refuses to believe that she could have had anything to do with the crime. His assistant, Kaoru Utsumi, however, is convinced Ayane is guilty. While Utsumi's instincts tell her one thing, the facts of the case are another matter.

Excellent Listen
Revisado: 06-14-17
This is a masterfully written story. The pacing is excellent--the story begins by revealing the murderer but the reader is left to follow along with the police in figuring out how it was done. As a lover of intellectual mysteries, the fact that the murderer is revealed in the beginning allows the reader to set about solving the real puzzle. In many mystery stories it is easy to determine the murderer anyway-this style allows the reader to follow along with the ideas, leads and missteps of the police. Very entertaining and clever.
